There’s now a high speed train to Fenghuangucheng station. From there a taxi is 30 yuan by meter. That was how we arrived from Zhangjiajie but the train also goes to Guangzhou, etc. As we’ve visited many old towns in China, we feel the main difference was it is located by the river and by gosh, the night view was beautiful. The whole town is lighted up and it is reflected on the still river! We stayed 2 nights as we wanted to relax but one night is enough. My recommendation is to stay overnight for that view, otherwise if you’ve visited other ancient towns you can give it a miss.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023

We took the flight from Beijing to Tongren airport for a vacation during the last Christmas holiday, we booked a hotel along the river with a fantastic view, since it was low season for the covid, it was very peaceful for the whole city. With a lot of well-preserved wood houses and stone streets, Fenghuang ancient city is very charming, there’s a lot of snacks you can try such as dry kiwi, ginger candy and so on. Don’t miss the night lights scenery when you are in Fenghuang, a lot of music bars & beer bar were closed when we were there.
This ancient city is not very big, 2 hours will be enough for a visiting.

The place was okay. It is more pleasant during the day time when you can really see what’s there. It can get very crowded at night with all the bars operating. I thought the town was boring though I enjoyed the boat ride along the river passing through the Rainbow Bridge.

An ancient Chinese cultural experience. We had a wonderful May Day vacation in over 300 year old Qing Dynasty Phoenix Ancient Town. Many tourists were here walking around as they did before the coronavirus pandemic. About 85% were wearing a mask. Rated the best Chinese ancient town. Many of the structures have changed little from their original construction in about 1704.

I wrote this review in light of not finding much detailed information from other reviewers on here about how to get to Phoenix Ancient Town, or about Phoenix Ancient Town in general. I hope you find this information useful.
Phoenix Ancient Town
This is a truly amazing ancient town and is a must-see destination in China. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty in 681 AD and is considered to be China’s most beautiful small town, and I would agree! It is beautiful and should be at the top of your list of places to visit in China.
It takes about 2-3 hours to fully walk around the city while stopping occasionally to take pictures. It’s one big circular loop and you can start from your hotel, walk around in a big circle, and finish back at your hotel. There are lots of different alleyways inside the ancient city to explore, and if you choose to take your time and explore the alleyways and stop for food and souvenir shopping, then it’ll definitely take more than 2-3 hours to do the full loop.
When I visited
I arrived at my hotel on Thursday 22 February 2018 at 12pm, one day after Chinese New Year finished. It was still extremely busy this day. The tourist crowd halved on Friday 23 February, and surprisingly the least busy day was Saturday 24 February. I left my hotel at 1pm on Saturday 24 February. The season is winter, but it wasn't overly cold. The average temperature for the 3 days I was there was between 10-15 degrees Celsius. I got hot from all the walking I did.
How long to stay
I stayed here for 2 nights and 3 days and thought it was enough time. I really wanted to be able to take my time to fully explore the ancient city and take lots of photos. I didn’t feel like this was too long because there are lots of alleyways in the ancient city and new discoveries to make every day. You can definitely stay for a shorter time though. I would definitely recommend to stay for at least one night. The day time view is beautiful, but they light up the city during the night time, which is equally just as beautiful to see. Both make for excellent pictures, and if you’re a social media person like me, you’ll actually struggle to find pictures to post cause there are so many amazing photo opportunities in this place, you just want to post them all!
Food
There are so many food options available inside the ancient city, the majority of which is Chinese food based – beef, chicken, seafood and vegetarian. I struggled to find any Western style restaurant, however there are some restaurants that sell pizza, and was probably the most ‘Western’ type of food I found. There are quite a few cafes that sell coffee and tea. Dessert wise, there were some small ice cream/gelato shops, and the only type of cake I found in all the cafes was cheesecake. There are lots of restaurants and street food available, depending on what you like. Outside directly surrounding the ancient city is a large amount of restaurants, so you can choose to eat inside or outside the ancient town. Something which did gross me out was that I saw a few women washing vegetables in the river to be used and cooked in their restaurants. The river water looks clean and is constantly flowing, but people spit in the water and also directly wash clothes and other things in the river. There’s also rubbish in the water. I’m sure not all restaurants clean their vegetables that way, but this made me paranoid. There were some awesome and delicious street food, and these were a great source of sustenance especially with all the walking you can do in this place.
Hotel
There are so many hotel options available inside and directly outside surrounding Phoenix Ancient Town, to accommodate all types of budgets. And you really get what you pay for. I would definitely recommend staying inside the ancient city. During the night time, right in the middle of Phoenix Ancient Town, there are a lot of clubs and karaoke bars that are super loud and are open till very late (like 1am onwards). If you want peace and quiet at night, I would recommend that you find a hotel that is away from the centre. I stayed at Phoenix Motel Inn which was away from the centre and was a great location. I would recommend hotels around the same area if you want a place that’s quiet, otherwise, if you don’t mind noise, you can stay in the centre. I classify the centre of Phoenix Ancient Town as Biancheng Chadong Town (search this up on Trip Advisor). This is by far the loudest and busiest area of Phoenix Ancient Town, where all the clubs and karaoke bars are, and where the majority of tourist traffic is held.
How to get there
A lot of people recommend to get a bus from Zhangjiajie to Phoenix Ancient Town. It’s a 3 hour bus ride if you take this option. I would recommend not doing this and actually flying directly into Tongren Airport. It is the closest airport to Phoenix Ancient City and is about a 40 minute drive from Tongren Airport to Phoenix Ancient Town. It is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Phoenix Ancient Town.
Transport from the airport to Phoenix Ancient Town
I didn’t see any taxis at Tongren Airport. They maybe there, but I couldn’t spot any. I would recommend that you arrange for your hotel to get a driver to pick you up at the airport. They charged me 200rmb which is definitely overpriced, but I’m happy to pay for convenience. It will take about 40-50 minutes to get to Phoenix Ancient Town depending on the traffic. The traffic can get really congested as soon as you hit the Phoenix Ancient Town area.
Tongren Airport (if you’re flying out of Tongren Airport)
The check-in and security screening process at Tongren Airport was very slow. They have limited staff at this airport and it took one hour for me to get my plane ticket and to be screened through security. I would recommend that you get to the airport at least 2 hours ahead of your flight time just in case it’s a super busy day. There is also very limited café/restaurant options at this airport. At the time of me writing this, they only had one small 7-Eleven type of store with limited snack and drink options after you cleared security screening.
Negatives
The centre of the town can get super busy with tourists, and the peak times that I observed were from 12pm to 2pm. It then starts getting super busy again from about 5pm onwards when it starts getting dark, because they light up the ancient city and this attracts more tourists.
It does feel like there’s constant flocks of busses of Chinese tourists that keep coming in and out of the ancient town, and it just doesn’t stop, so just be prepared for that. The tourist busses start rolling in at about 8am and don’t stop. There are definitely peaks of when there’s more that come in as mentioned above. The alleyways can also get congested, squashy and pushy, so patience is definitely needed.
For an ancient town, it does feel quite commercialised with all the clubs, bars and hawkers.
I wish the Chinese tourists were more considerate about their trash. They leave trash everywhere around the city. There is an army of local people employed to pick up trash both on the ground and in the river, which is great, but I wish the Chinese tourists looked after the town better.
You will see live animals in tiny cages outside restaurants on sale to be eaten. The ones I saw, apart from seafood, included ducks, chickens, pheasants, rabbits, turtles, and this bizarre rat-beaver looking animal.
Photographic tips
You must go to the top of the tallest and biggest bridge at the major end of Phoenix Ancient Town where all the clubs and karaoke bars are (Biancheng Chadong Town area). It has 2 huge archways and cars pass over it. You can’t miss it. The view from up here of Phoenix Ancient Town is spectacular and the photo opportunities are excellent. Unfortunately, the day I went, it was a bit foggy, so my pictures aren’t that clear, but on a sunny day, the photos will turn out brilliantly.
There are only few bridges that run through Phoenix Ancient Town and connect you from one side to the other side. For me, lightning is so important, which is why I recommend to stay at least a whole day, because one side of the town is always constantly in shadows due to the sun. Even at midday, the angle of the sunrays don’t hit the town properly, so there’s shadows everywhere, or the light is far too harsh and bright and make the photos look terrible. I was constantly fighting the sun to get good lighting and going from one side to the other side of the town using the bridges. Both sides of the town look amazing in photos, so I personally wanted to be able to take pictures of both sides with good lighting and had to wait for the sun to be at the right angles to take really good shots.

I second the view of "not worth the effort". In our case it occupied two days of our 12day tour with a lot of travel but little to experience. First it took 5 hrs to go from Zhang Jia Jie to Fenghuang. After spending the night there, we had to get up at 5am in order to leave at 6am to catch the flight in Changsha to Guangzhou. The bus ride took over 8hrs including toilet and lunch breaks. The ride was long because Fenghuang is southwest of ZJJ and we got farther away from Changsha by going there from ZJJ. For all that effort, all we got were the scene we all saw in the tour literature plus shopping. Even the bridge was lined on both sides by shops. The shops were mostly for ginger candy and silver jewelry. If this were a half-day trip from, say, Chengdu, it would be OK. For 2 days all we got was another version of Jin Li in Chengdu, Xian Tien Di in Shanghai, and similar areas in Beijing and Suzhou; it is not worth it. I would not recommend any tour with Fenghuang as part of the itinerary. It is no wonder that most tours for this area do not include Fenghuang.

10 years ago, I was told by a friend who was from Fenghuang that it was a beautiful place, and that I should visit SOON. The photos she showed me were beautiful.
I regret not having done as she advised, because now that it has been "developed", night lights, tourists trinkets, and booming bars have taken over the heart of this ancient city lining the river.
Previous local residents, mostly Miao and Tujia minorities, have mostly moved out of the ancient heart of the city, collecting rent from outsiders who run tourist businesses there. The result is an empty shell of an ancient cultural jewel, completely overrun by tourists.
One good thing were the locals who gave us advice on what to do and what to eat. Besides the odd few, mostly young people, others were mostly very helpful.
DO NOT STAY in the middle of the old town, unless you like the sound of loud bars. If you must go to Fenghuang, stay at one of the small privately run hotels just outside the old city.

This is a beautiful little city. I loved every moment of it. Our trip to Zhangjiajie national park was intense, it was perfect to come here to relax after a few days of hiking.
Stay here for at least two days. They have many nice shops, cafes, restaurants and bars in the area. You can also take a taxi to the Southern great wall. Very beautiful.
The people are very friendly and the vibe of the city is just amazing!
Tip: We didn't book a hotel. Just showed up. There are plenty of hotels in that area. I would suggest going to visit the room before you pay. We got a nice balcony with the river view room for only 100rmb. And the bathroom was western. Great deal!

Besides those main streets along the river, is it dark or safe to walk in alley at night? Any best spot for night photography at alley?

Can you suggest any cheap hostel in Fenghuang which has a view of the river?
Written July 22, 2019
There are plenty of hostel in a river side, we staid in Yinji inn, very nice and helpful stuff. You should consider that in an old town you should not expect perfect hotel they all are hostel type. Cheep and you get as you pay.very simple breakfast, clean room, nice views and balconies. It was acceptable for us but if you dont walk to go about 30 steps down to the river side you should ask in advance is there steps down from the street the hotel is to the river side.

Is it true that visiting this place is really expensive? I read a review that there's fees just to walk on a certain path as a tourist. This is considering that I'll be using US dollars, and that it has a higher value exchange rate than Chinese yuan currency. Also, is the sanitation something to worry about while visiting Ancient Phoenix Town? I heard that as a foreigner, sometimes a person can catch parasites from food and/or water in different countries. Thank you

I was never asked for any fees or paid any fees to walk around. I was only there for one evening and overnight stay though. Only the area along the river is scenic. The main sections of town were very general with office building, apartments, typical small stores, all okay but not with any tourist appeal. The area along the river was very nice though.
I had dinner and breakfast in that city without any problems, however diarrhea and food poisoning seem to have higher occurrences among visitors to China based on conversations with other tourists and my own prior experiences there. On this 8-day trip though none of us had any unpleasant health problems.
Bring some over the counter medicines for cold symptoms or intestinal issues just in case.

I recently took a bus from fenghuang (presume you refer to that as Phoenix ancient town) to Wuliyungan. U can take the same but the other way round. It took about 4.5 hrs fenghuang bus stop to zhangjiajie. From fenghuang bus stop you can take a cab to ancient town (abt 10-15rmb).... depending on where u r staying. The cab will drop you to the nearest parking from where you will have to walk to ancient city hotel. I did the opposite direction so not sure about zhangjiajie- fenghuang bus timings.
