Although we didn’t climb Molden in January, we drove past it daily as we were staying on Mollandsmarki road. You might need chains on your car depending on weather...we wouldn’t of gotten up the road without them.

We spent almost a month in south Norway, from Stavanger to Andalsnes. We did many hikes and bike rides and drove many of the tourist routes and took in many beautiful views but hands down, hiking Molden will be my best memory of the fjords. The views are downright spectacular in every direction and there are no crowds! We encountered perhaps 20 people on the trail on a GORGEOUS sunny weekend afternoon, went skinny dipping in a little alpine lake a hundred meters or so from the trail and the peak is so broad that we only saw a couple people in the distance while we were up there for an hour having a picnic, enjoying the beautiful views. There are great views starting from halfway up but make sure you get to the top and walk around the peak in a circle to appreciate all the views. If I was local, I'd do this hike a few times a year, just stunning. I'm almost reluctant to write this review because the best part was we didn't have to share the view with 1000 tourists like we did at Preikestolen and Kjeragbolten so shhhhh, keep this gem a secret!

We were about .2 miles shy from the summit. Turned around because it started raining pretty hard, got super windy, and it did not look like it was going to clear anytime soon. Beautiful views along the way. I would consider this trail more 'moderate' rather than 'challenging', but then again we did not quite make it all the way. If you zoom into the area on Google Maps or Google Earth, the parking lot shows up as 'Parking Krossen'. There is a bathroom there as well.

We hiked this on a hot late afternoon in late June. There's a 620 meter (2000 ft) elevation gain in just 4 km (2.5 miles), so it's not long but it's quite steep. The early climbing is in the forest but it becomes exposed once past the shepherd's hut, which is more than halfway (370 m elevation from the start) and has a spectacular view. The top of Molden is marked by a huge square cairn but the best fjord views are actually on the edge of the summit plateau near the antennas. As you are climbing up and reaching the final scree plateau of the summit, take the obvious fork to the right, towards the antennas, to keep the best views. The visitnorway.com website has lovely photos, which convinced us to do this hike, but those were not taken at the Molden summit. You'll have to descend a fair amount from the summit in the North/North East direction to get those views.
The starting point is easy to find and is close to Solvorn and Hafslo, follow Mollandsmarki to the Krossen car park. There's a bathroom there and a sign with hike information, but the hike starts at the other end of the parking lot, a large obvious path that goes upwards from the start.
We are pretty strong hikers and it took us 2 hours up in fine weather. We wandered around the top to get the best views (not knowing that the summit was not the best viewpoint). We were glad to have water, sunscreen, and insect repellent (flies).
The steepness of this hike is similar to Besseggen. Preikestolen is a lot easier.

One good way to feel alive is to climb steep hills and feel your heart pound in your chest. If you enjoy the feeling try walking to Molden from Marifjøra! The peak is at 1116 meters above sea level (and yes that is where you start, so you have to climb the whole 1116 meters) and it takes 7 kilometers to reach it. The reward is the most awesome view of Sognefjorden. You can either chose the same route down or take a less challenging one that takes you to a parking lot after 4 kilometres.

We hiked up and down in 3 hours. Fantastic panoramic views at the top. Steep climb at the beginning, but well worth the trip.

My family and I hiked to Molden. Fortunately we had a beautiful day so the views were stunning (as are all the views in the fjords!). This was a moderately difficult hike but if you take your time it shouldn’t be a problem for most people. Elevation is about 2,000ft with a couple steep areas and close to 5 miles out and back (as others have mentioned). Signs to parking lot off 55 where you start the hike.

High and Mighty look over the fjords and almost feeling alone. A strenuous hike for end 50ers but worth it. Beautiful weather to match. A feel good day.

This hike takes some work but from the parking area on Mollandmarksi road it is only about 1.5 hours to the top. You look down with beautiful views of Sognefjord. We went in May and there was little snow. But depending on the winter there could be some snow on the trail. Recommend waterproof shoes if possible.

How about directions to the starting point? I can't really make those out from anywhere I have seen so far. We will be coming up from Leikanger. Thanks! :)

From the Mollandsmarki road parking it's not far and pretty well signed. Exact location is also in the (free) hiking booklet you can find at the tourist office (eg.in Sogndal). Enjoy your hike !

Hi, I'll be travelling from Sogndal skysstajson. Rental car is not an option since I don't have a licence. Is there a public bus to krossen (Mollandsmarki) ? If not, is Heggmyrane the closest bus stop? Otherwise, I really appreciate for any advice to get to Krossen! Thank you
I've just come back from this trip and have been to mollandsmarki krossen by public bus, which stopped at heggmyrane. This option is not the best option because walking up to krossen takes around 45 min and some part of the walk is at route 55, where cars pass by at high speed.

Hi, how would you recommend one getting to the start of this trail, for someone visiting Norway from overseas? If getting a rental car the only way?

You would need a rental car to get to this point, unless the hotel you are staying at can drive you to the start point and pick you up after.

It really depends on the weather from year to year. July/august is normally perfect, but April/ Mau could be possible too, if early spring.
