- Fredric JohnDubai, United Arab Emirates848 contributionsStreet Art in PenangThe street art is what made Penang famous. While walking around, it’s like going on a treasure hunt to see which art I can see. It was intersecting with different streets but I managed to find the art while rummaging through my Google Maps guide. I’ve seen street art in other countries but this one also defines what Penang culture is really all about.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 18, 2023
- LeonhknyHong Kong, China22,454 contributionsHip PenangExploring Penang is of much fun with the additional of street art. Beyond meandering around historic buildings and temples, visitors can also check and find the hip and creative face of the Malaysian city. The paintings scattered around George Town really adds color to the tourist experience.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 20, 2024
- roy vTraralgon, Australia6,027 contributionsGreat to see some clever artworksWe saw many works of art as we walked the old streets of George Town. A few were hard to find and easily missed if you weren’t carefull. We had a town map showing where they are so just followed it in very hot weather stopping for a refreshing drink now and then . We will see more over the next couple of days as we discover more of this interesting town. They are well done and very clever, well done to the artist involved.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 27, 2024
- EndlessVoyageCalifornia1,088 contributionsVisit in the evening and be prepared for a lot of InstagrammersIt was terribly hot - over 100 Fahrenheit & nearly 40 Celsius - while we were in George Town. We tried doing the street art during daylight hours and gave up. We tried again at about 5 p.m. and it was a far better experience, albeit very touristy. Some clever pieces that really attracted the Instagram crowd. Most pieces had people there. Would I consider it a highlight of Penang? No - but if you are out and about it is fun to see something different.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 10, 2024
- Bill NSurrey, Canada5 contributionsA great perspective!Mohd Remyzan Remy was our guide for the Withlocals Georgetown street art tour. Remy showed us great street art that we would never have found on our own. More importantly, he also gave us the social economic background of the art. How it fits into the cultural history of Georgetown. It was fun and eye opening.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 27, 2024
- SuratrichardSurat Thani, Thailand2,558 contributionsSomething round every corner!Georgetown is famous for its street art and no matter how many times you visit, there’s always something you’ve not seen before. One of the problems is that it can get extremely busy and also very hot so it’s best to visit early in the morning. It’s free, it’s fun and it’s fabulous! Sometimes the art work is difficult to see and photograph because of parked vehicles…the traffic can get quite busy on some streets. But…you can’t visit Penang without seeing Georgetown and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and street food stalls when you need to have a rest! Highly recommended.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 23, 2024

Some are obvious to find, others are more hidden. Simple but so beautiful with the heritage buildings. I suggest doing a trishaw ride as the driver will take you to the main ones and then you can walk between the rest.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 28, 2024

It’s like a treasure hunt of art. It’s on every wall, high and low, big and small. There is an official guide to talk you through some of the main pieces but there are plenty more additional items to seek out. Had a great time finding them all. The metal installations tell you the story of the town and it’s history. Some of the art is 3D which makes it interactive and fun.

Nice walking around the street. Please find a map of Georgetown/Street Art so you can find the art at different wall. The street will be close for vehicle crossing on Saturday at 3PM to give the tourist free walking around the street.
There are many bicycle rental services nearby. Either the traditional or electric bicycle. You may rent from RM6-RM20 per bicycle.
You may also find the 'ais kepal' nearby the 2 kids on the bicycle art. It is really awesome when you having it on the hot sunny day. Phewww..its amazing.!!

What else to do when in Georgetown on a Sunday during a business trip? Hunting out the various street art work makes for an excellent, if slightly hot option. Most of the iconic examples are on google maps so you can easily self guide your way around. Some has been added later and in different styles, however there are lots of options to see. You can then of course grab yourself a tourist mine to of one of them in the form of a bag or obligatory fridge magnet.
Don’t be surprised to be asked to take photos of other tourists at each site as this is a popular self guided attraction in the town. Worth heading out for.

While in Europe so many buildings are covered with nonsensical, usually ugly graffiti it is a surprise to see all that often high quality street art in George Town. The town seems proud of it and at the Tourist Information Centre on Beach Street a very useful map is handed out by the name 'Marking George Town'.
At the center are 52 steel-rod caricatures, entertaining and informative at the same time. They are distributed all over the core zone and the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. As it says on the map they were done by the artists Tang Mun Kian, Baba Chuah, Reggie Lee and Lefty.
Also the location of other street art, mainly paintings, is given on the map. Most famous is the work by Lithuanian born Ernest Zacharevic, now a resident of Penang. Much photographed are his 'Children on Bicycle' and 'Boy on Motorbike'. Other known paintings are 'Indian Boatsman' by Russian artist Julia Volchkova or the 'Monkey God' in the China House by Thomas Powell from the UK.

A surprise round every nook and corner, it dressing up the streets! It is a smart way to create an interesting vibe.
Different art installation allows you to be part of it. Just immerse yourself in the scene and it will get your meaning.

Penang Street Art located around Georgetown (namely Jalan Penang, Muntri Street, Weld Quay, Lebuh Leith, Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street and more). There are a lot of painted art and murals that we can see while taking some pictures. This street art will stop one in track for the Instagram photos. For example, mural Kids On a bicycle at Armenian Street, mural The Kungfu Girl in Blue at Along Muntri Street and mural A Boy on a chair at Cannon Street. Besides, you also can buy 'ais kepal' that sold at several stalls at this area. Penang Street Art is one of the must visit places when you come to the Penang, because it's free and you can see a beautiful paintings and murals as well.

The street art is full of creative and fun art. I really appreciate the artist and the way they show and promote Malaysia deserve a standing ovation. But, the place is too crowded with people and cars, especially during weekend.

Good place to take a photo and get the delicious food. This place become a popular and must visit place for tourist. Along the street can see many stall that sell the best and delicious food. I like to walk when come here because i can see a lot of thing and easy to stop any destination that i want. Not recommend to use car in this street because the street is narrow and become more crowded.

We liked the street art that was popping up now and then in the streets & small alleys as we strolled along them. They are getting damaged from all the pictures people take but that's part of it, it's a live item and something else then art behind glass doors...
TIP: one of the better ones is actually not in the old town but some huge art painted on several containers near McDonald's on Karpal Singh Dr.

How much time would i need hiring a tri shaw to see the street art.? Can i pick one up from the cruise port?
Written March 18, 2019
Depends on whether you intend to have any stops. Trishaws are available at the cruise port. Price by the hour for extended sightseeing can be negotiated. Advisable to negotiate the fare first before getting on the trishaw.

Trying staying at Cheong Fatt Tze in Georgetown, its right near the night markets, the Clan Jetties, and the street vendors. Also look up Mark at Simply Enak ( find it via google ) and book a 4 hour food tour, he is amazing. Have fun.
