You HAVE to go to this place! It is so absolutely magnificent! I love love love to walk up the dam for a total of 2.8km if I remember correctly. It is so amazing. The wind when you reach the top is crazyyy. There's also a hidden playground/resting area up the steps when you reach the top. This has became one of my fav spots for exercises. The walk up isn't too tiring as well (depends on your fitness level). There's also this uncle who sells homemade nutmeg at the bottom before your hike up starts, buy it definitely. If you love nature like I do, get your ass up there!

A nice walk. It's not too far to do a circuit around the reservoir and definitely worth it. There are wild monkeys so be careful not to walk around holding a carrier bag because they will assume it's food.
After the monkeys, the place is quiet and tranquil but at the same time brimming with wildlife. The sound of cicadas, the occasional big butterfly, birds chirping.
In addition to that, it's just beautiful scenery all the way.

This is not an tourist attraction and I believe the local also prefer this place to be kept unknown to tourist. It is actually a Dam at Air Itam which located at the hilltop, just above the location of Kek Lok Si Temple. Maybe no mini van or coach bus are allowed or unable to drive up to the dam area, as such it never showed in tour agency' itinerary. Hence little known or unknown to tourist. However this dam is very popular with the local, especially joggers or hikers as there is hiking trail around the dam which estimated 2.8km long, which may took you about 40 min to an hour to complete the entire course. If you not intend to go for the jog or hiking, the view at the dam is definitely worth for you to pay this dam a visit.

In Janaury 2016, Penang Hill was closed for maintenance, a lot of tourist were very disappointed that they unable to see the scenic view of Georgetown, however not many of them knew that Air Itam Dam is another alternative to have a birdview of Georgetown. Most important there is no admission fee was needed for enjoying these panoramic view.

I will suggest to visit the Dam either early the morning when the air is fresh or late in the evening when the view is the best due to the light on from the building from Georgetown. Take a stroll if possible and FYI this is also a good place for picnic as it quite cool during evening time. Afternoon can be very hot for any activities.

If you are planning to visit Kek Lok Si Temple in your Penang Itinerary, do plan to visit the Air Itam Dam, since it just located above the temple. If you do not wish to pay and squeeze your way up to Penang Hill for the Georgetown view, Air Itam Dam will be a perfect choice.

Do give me a helpful vote if my review will able to help you in your itinerary planning.

The air is very fresh and suitable to sit down for meditation. We get to enjoy the beautiful greens along the way. Advisable to bring a cap or umbrella as weather is hot.
It is worthwhile visiting as the scenery is very nice and you can take photos for remembrance.

Locals usually park their car at the hill top ( same level with the Dam ) and walk from the gate of the dam to the inner forest reserve. The parking lot on hill top can only accommodate approx.20 cars therefore visitors can either park at the base of the hill or the Kek Lok Si temple private car park however walking up hill is not for the weak heart.Weekend lots of hikers uses the dam forest reserve trail to hike up to Penang Hill which is approx.3hrs.

This is a dam that is a favourite amongst locals for its peace and tranquility. There are sweeping views of Georgetown and the mainland too can be seen on clear days. It's best to come up here during the mornings and evenings.

The dam itself is part of a simple impounding reservoir that supplies water to Penang. There are descriptive panels that detail its construction, which may be of interest to Architects and Civil Engineers-to-be.

Most people drive up the road, and there is a proper carpark 100m from the dam. You will pass the Kek Lok Si temple, so if it is possible, one could make a detour up to see the stunning views.

It is possible to walk up, but as I learned, it is a tiring trek of about 40mins up steep, winding roads whereas the drive is less than 10mins. One cyclist was struggling so much that he was within eyesight for most of the trek. Also there are monkeys on the way, so it may be a little dangerous. It is possible to call an Uber up to the top, but they take 30mins to reach.

We were already in Air Itam, so we went up hill to the dam. The road isn't very wide and quite steep. But when arriving near the dam there is a decend parking lot. The place is well maintained and a bit less warm than the city. In the jungle that surrounds the lake are many birds, reptiles and mamals. In the lake we saw a large water turtle, at least 60 cm diameter! Further a Malayan Monitor lizard of 3 m length coming out of the water and high in the sky two bald eagles. The trail around the lake is 2,8 km length and easy accessible.

Just a pleasant walk, long or short. People talk to you, take plenty of water. Lovely ambling paths for oldies and children. Some monkeys who caused no problems, some dogs, again no problems but don`t show food.
Restful, green, peaceful.

A tranquil hangout for nature lovers. The reservoir contrasts with the greens giving out a sense of calm and peace. Watching the Penang city skyline from the top feels amazing.

Located not far from Ke Lok Si Temple, Air Itam Dam is the oldest dam in Peangn, completed 1914, and very small. But the scenery very beautiful, and often see the people taking wedding pictures there. I also like much the colourful butterflyers at the Dam. Also good place for cycling. Only one inconvenient, lacking of parking at weekend
