Maybe here, in Penang, this building looks somehow out of the ordinary... Although it’s definitely not. Three hundred meters from here stand two architectural masterpieces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Administration buildings. And here a good two-story building from the end of the 19th century was completely tastelessly added to the third floor in the 20th century. Not very well maintained. Turns black with fungus. It's not worth paying attention to in an architectural sense.

This historical three storey building which was built in 1905 was the head office of the Star newspaper from the 1970's to 2002. The Star Pitt Street has been rebranded to celebrate the cultural and diverse heritage of Penang. It now houses the Star's office and a book store on the ground floor, a resource centre and exhibition space on the first floor and The Penang Philharmonic Orchestra on the top floor. The bookstore is worth a visit with a wide range of publications from Areca and some souvenirs on sale.

The Penang based newspaper Star used to be edited and printed in this building, which now has still their advertising office for easy access, the main business is at Bayan Lepas. The space is open to enter and have a brief, but interesting look at the island's colourfull history. Search for the picture of Jimmy Choo, he is a Penangite too. There are books and souvenirs on sale and a free copy of Penang monthly to pick up. It has well written articles about the past glory and modern day life, sponsored by the think tank Penang Institute.

Visited the Jazz performance last evening. It was fantastic !
Not just the performance of the big band , but also the renovation of the whole building , just to provide a platform for the art lovers.
Check the website of the performance before coming.

this used to be the Star Publication Office in the 70's. Now it has been converted into a Arts and craft centre and book shop. It has a wide range of books and souvenirs for sale. A good place to looks for books.

Recently remodelled and refurbished offices of the local newspaper The Star, the new centre for arts and culture features an excellent range of publications by publishing house Areca Books, covering a wide range of local and cultural interests in beautifully produced books. Some clever and attractive souvenirs of the island also on sale. Upstairs has been converted to a meeting and exhibition space, currently showing (until end of February 2015) a selection of photographs illustrating traditional crafts carried out on the island. Worth a visit for all bibliophiles, and on the Street of Harmony with much more to see.
