We saw the bridge when we were waiting for the ferry at the piers and at the time of crossing the strait. From a distance it looks like a straight line along the horizon with an emphasis in one place. Beautiful. Particularly interesting is the cable-stayed element for the passage of ships.

Very long thin bridge. The bridge connects the area of Seberang Perai on the Malay peninsula with the island of Penang. The bridge crosses over the Penang Strait. I went to the Rainbow Skywalk and Observatory Deck where you had a good overview of the bridge. It looked stunning with the sun setting.

Managed to squeeze few hours going across the bridge. Intended to go to Design Village. The “new” bridge was spectacular. Long stretch of road with sea view. WOW moment!!!

Penang city is connected by these bridges, wonderful free bus service called CAT running almost all corners of city. Main land and island. Airport is in Island side. Another bus service which is more frequent and regular cost only 30 ringgit for a month for unlimited travel. This pass can be made after showing passport at central bus terminal called Kontor. Both bridges are more than 13km long. When using the old bridge from island, going to mainland, there is no bus service and very cheap taxi can be used. For coming back ferry service is cheapest.

The Penang bridge was opened in 1985 and before that traffic had to come to Georgetown on the ferry. Now an essential link between mainland peninsular Malaysia and Penang.

We tool a taxi to tour around Penang Island and we also crossed from the Island to the mainland on the new bridge, which has long sweeping bends to cope with high winds and seas. A fantastic feat of engineering. The new bridge took about 40mins to cross. After shopping on the mainland, we came back to Georgetown on the old bridge, which is quite straight and took approx 25mins. Both bridges worth are taxi drive to see different aspects of the Island and mainland.

One of Penang's landmarks and definitely worth a visit. The bridge is over 13 kilometres long and links the mainland to the island. It is a nice drive with scenic views, however you aren't permitted to stop your vehicle on the bridge. There is a toll on the return journey back to the island. Avoid travelling back during the peak hour or you might find yourself caught up in the traffic jam.

Hi we are on a cruise that stops at Penang, we always like to get as much from our visit as possible, would you recommend crossing the bridge and how would we go about arranging that if time permits.

The bridge is spectacular and the drive over is well worth it. You can then return to George Town by vehicle ferry (well worth it if you have the time) or you can drive back from Butterworth to George Town.
If you do not have a car booked to drive yourself, try a taxi as they are not overly expensive.

For those not driving, how do we tourists pay for the toll on our return journey to Penang Island? How frequent do these ferries run between both places?
Written January 16, 2019
The ferry station from mainland is in butterworth terminal ferry. You can pay RM1.50 for each person. The ferry from island is in georgetown and it is free.
