Amazing place with lots of restaurants and boats to rent and see the beautiful lake. But scary as we had no idea how deep it was and it looked very deep.

Among the high mountains is Lake Kournas. This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Crete. Very nice place with its history and unique landscapes.

The lake is somewhat hidden among the mountains and is easily approached by road from the nearby village of Georgioupolis. Not very big, calm and beautiful is a nice to see place if you are in the area. You can find coffee shops and local restaurants by the shore and is nice to walk by a little. The whole area could be developed... Parked in a small car park on the main! road, there is at least 2 both take around a dozen cars. It's a short walk down a hill to the lake passing tourist shops, more car parks & Tavernas on either side of a narrow road. At the lake side there is a small marina full of pedalos for hire.... More

Kournos Lake is a short drive [15 minutes?] from Gergiopoplis with plenty of 'free' parking and a good lakeside road surface for a stroll. Local people tend to be friendly without going 'over the top'. Fine for family groups, couples and foursomes too.

Myself and my partner hired a car for a few days so we decided to drive to this lake. It was a lovely place to see, the views are great and lots of nature about. We hired a pedalo for an hour at 7 euros, good fun and nice and peaceful on the lake,a nice wind down afternoon. You can... More

Have been coming here for several years as its a naturalists paradise. It's a beautiful fresh water lake you can hire Pedlos and take a tour . There used to be an area cordoned off to protect wildlife and nesting birds . However no one adheres to it anymore. This is a breeding site for red necked and slavonion grebes... More

You wouldn't expect to find this in Crete but this lake set in a basin is an ideal sheltered setting and must be visited. The locals go there on Sundays but an equally pleasant experience.
