All reviews beautiful place free parking few hours clear water paddle boats worth a visit late afternoon plenty of parking couple of hours the main road stunning views bread souvenir shops per hour gold fish clams pedalo hire
very peaceful sandy shore, clear water, watching the birds on the lake and the surrounding mountains. In the summer there are lots of visitors and sunbathers, pedaloes to go on the lake etc. A very different experience
We've made a trip to this lake. Was not easy to find, but we got there eventually. We rented pedaloes and took a ride along the lake. We saw turtles, goats and crabs. I did not see the beach and I would not dive into...More
We loved Lake Kournas during our trip to Crete in July but I think that there are some tips worth taking on board to maximise your enjoyment.
1. Go mid week (during term time if possible): We were told that on the weekend it is...More
Not the easiest place to find !!! Soon as tou walk on the beach tou're hassled by guys trying to rent you a padaloe. As there seemed to be little else to do we took one. Nice location really but not worth the trip all...More
If you can see past the tavernas, tacky pedaloes to rent and souvenir shops the lake is set in beautiful scenery with dramatic mountain backdrop.
Don't be taken in by the "free parking" for customers signs all along the approach road there are similar notices...More
Lake Kournas was a disappointment. Sure it was kind of pretty with the landscape but the beach was trashy and it wasn’t nearly as good as the pictures made it seem like. I wouldn’t recommend! It gets 2 stars because the landscape was okay. I...More
The lake is much smaller than it seems from the pictures. We were there in early October, and the shores were really muddy - it’s impossible to swim, as when you step into the water you sink knee-deep into greasy smelly mud. Disgusting. You can...More
Located off the beaten track just outside Rethymno is this freshwater lake serviced told by 5 underground springs.
Water lovely and refreshing and pedals at 10 euros for an hour are worth hiring to get around the lake and see the fish and maybe if...More

We found it best early morning or later in the afternoon as it's a bit cooler then and there isn't very much shade there. If you are going to hire a boat make sure you take a hat and sunscreen as the lake itself is a real sun trap. Tavernas do have shade but you can only stay there so long. It very stony so wear shoes and watch out for the Geese! They were sleeping as we walked by, thank goodness.
Hi, I would like to take this train to Lake Kournas first week of June. I checked their face book, which lacks details. My email to them was not answered. I have the following questions: 1. What is the timetable of this train? 2. Where to board the train in Georgioupolis? 3. How much is the fare? Ευχαριστώ πολύ

Hello there I expect that you have already seen the TA reviews for this train, but if not it may contain the info you require: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Rev… Also do be aware the resort does pretty much closes down in the winter months so it may be a case of they only check emails periodically ?
Georgioupolis in 1 day? (6 Replies)
Hi, I am travelling to Europe in September, with 5 nights in Crete. I'd like to visit Chania and Georgioupolis. Rather than spend 2/3 nights in each place, I'm thinking of staying in Chania the whole time and doing day trips from there. Is it possible to see Georgioupolis in 1 day? I won't have a car, but I understand that the bus runs hourly and takes about 50 minutes. I'm not interested in lying on the beach. I just want to see Agios Nikolaos, Lake Kournas and sit at a nice taverna...More

Hello and welcome to Crete. I,m Kostas from Chania. You can do that in 1 day of course. Georgioupolis isn,t that really big place and you can see the Lake, agios nikolaos church, even have a swim, in half a day, not even one whole. My suggestion is that if you start from Chania before 9 am, you can go to Rethymnon city, spend some hours there, then back to geourgioupolis, a few more hours there and back in Chania possibly around 7 or 8 pm. Easy to follow it even by bus. Have in mind that in...More
Fishing in crete (1 Reply)
I'm an avid game angler who specialises in fly fishing. Is there any fishing available in Crete? Is there and can you fish in Lake Kournas, Chania? Has anyone fished the beaches of Hersonisos for bass etc?

Hi there I'm no angler I'm afraid but you will always see lots of locals fishing of the harbour walls in Hersonissos. You won't I think see anyone fishing from the beaches as they are very narrow and usually heaving with sunbathers. A couple of miles west of Hersonissos is the little village of Anissaras where again, you'll find locals fishing from the small jetties that stick out maybe 100m into the sea and I've seen them landing bass and bream for sure.
