The lake is absolutely amazing! You DO NOT have to pass threw a restaurant like some people said?! We parked there and walked 2min down the street to the lake. There is a sign that you have to pay 2€ for parking but we didnt pay anything, maybe its a scam from the souvenir shop next to the parking place. There are Tretboats to rent for 7-10€ (depends on the size). We would definitely recommend to rent one, otherwise the experience at the lake is not the same. At the other side of the lake you can see turtles and beautiful fish. We have been there at the evening for 2hours, thats enough. The sun sets behind the hills at ca 7PM in June. So definitely would recommend going there in the evening. The water is clean and tourquise at the outer side so you can see the grund there. So beautiful. We didnt eat there.

This lake is stunning. Wish we had got there earlier to spend longer there! Beautiful clear cooling water on a hot day. Easy tourist 'Talos Train' takes you there and back for €6, can be caught from a couple of stops in Georgioupolis village. Drives past olive groves. Last train returns at 3.15pm which is too early in my opinion. There are lovely ceramic gifts for sale and a taverna to eat at. Sunbeds available free with some trees for shade. Can rent a pedalo for €7 for one hour (we didnt have time though). Water is beautiful and clear and refreshing. Lovely mountain scenery. Very relaxing but fairly busy. Would highly recommend!

Friday 21st August and we drove here from our hotel in Analipsi, a distance of about 150 kilometres, a 2 hour drive.

We were not disappointed, here has something for everyone and is a great day out.

We were greeted at the entrance by a very helpful guy, he explained about hiring the pedalos, swimming in the lake and the nature reserve.

The pedalos were €10 to hire for one hour on the Lake. Paddle boards were also available.

He also informed that some of the pathway was submerged in water, due water levels of the Lake. It is not possible to walk around the entire Lake at any time.

There are a small number of sunbeds and umbrellas which are free of charge, which visitors can use.

It is the only freshwater lake on Crete and has a perimeter of 3.5 kilometres. The water was so clear we could see the turtles and fish.

There were a number of tavernas around the area. There was also free parking by the Lake.

We only discovered the place on our last visit to Crete , but I must note that we were pleasantly surprised. The lake is in the middle of the road (west) from Rethymno to Chania. Next to the lake lies a village, reminiscent of the villages in the Far East. Like any natural resource, even in this place, the locals recognized the commercial potential inherent in the place and hence the place got a bit of a commercial (though reasonable) pan. Already at the entrance, restaurants have been set up that will try to give you a feeling that you should stop here, but you can continue driving along almost half of the lake when on the way there are restaurants (on the lake side) that offer kayak rentals (tip - at the end you will find the cheapest price, it started from 15 euros in first place and ended in 5 in last place). Apart from sitting in a restaurant and sailing on the lake (which was nice but there was a feeling of extraction pretty quickly), there are a number of stalls of souvenirs and produce of the locals (mostly pottery and souvenirs).

A must see, we spent around 2 hours here and hired a pedalo for 12 euros for an hour. The 4 of us went on one, you can even go swimming in the lake. Lots of cafe / food options and toilets. The water is so clear and fresh. Definitely worth a visit!

Amazing, absolute stunning place! The water is crystal clear and the lake surrounded by mountain. It’s possible to rent a paddle
Boat which is a fun way to explore the lake. However come early as it gets super crowded and that kind a takes a bit of the experience in the serene landscape. Unfortunately as with a lot
Of Places in Greece it has become a tourist trap, with beach chairs and restaurants popping up
All along the lake which I think is a pity. But definitely worth a go.

We are in the vicinity and came here our first day. Absolutely lovely! Took a paddle boat out to the far end, saw the turtles, some massive goldfish, and swam in the evening sun. It doesn’t appear overly developed: there’s a little lane of gift shops, parking and a few restaurants along the shore. We went to the Taverno Oneiro which doesn’t seem to be on Trip Advisor. As you head toward the lake it’s the first on the right. It looks really touristy with placards and menus in different languages, but it’s a fab spot for a relaxed supper. Super friendly welcome and service. Quick service too! And great food. There we discovered Cretan King beer and from our two visits (so far) we’ve have the vine leaves - home made, freshly made - first time they came with courgette flowers (as they are in season) even our kids liked them - they don’t normally; but we also sampled their souvlaki, lamb chops, gyros, (the meat comes from their family farm) calamari, gemista and little fishes. All delicious. Very laid back. Highly recommend!

In reality an protected landscape area. Its beautyfull. But its totaly overrun by the people who wants to make money with the tourists who are lured there. Water and ground in the lake are dirty, garbage lying around, plants and soil is trampled flat. Shields with indication that it is an protected area are torn out and overgrown. Sad to see it. Don't go there.

We came around noon, there were many boats in the lake but still some available.
The water is clear only in some places.
It is a fairly small lake and one-hour paddle boat is sufficient, unless you want to jump of it for a swim.
Easy access from Rethymno

What a wonderful gem of a place this is - beautiful lake and stunning surrounds only 30 minute drive from Rethymno. Two teenage girls had top time - we hired a pedalo, swam and lazed around the lake. Lots of food places dotted around to eat but choose wisely as not all great quality!!! A lovely and relaxing afternoon - no sunbeds to rent and not a lot of shade so get there early as it was very busy after 1:00 pm!
