One of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, the castle of Fougeres impresses with its grandeur and majesty. It is a huge architectural space with 13 towers and several courtyards. It played an important role in the 100 Years' War and in the history of Brittany. entrance price is 9 euros. Worth the visit

An interesting building but we were not able to go inside as it was a Sunday.. It does have information about it on boards outside telling you about the history.

You do a self guided tour in this castle. One of the towers is six levels so you do get great views. You are able to walk on the ramparts at the third level. Interesting history, nice furniture and paintings.

My wife and I spent a couple of hours visiting the chateau de Vitre last month. This is a beautiful defensive castle well worth the time to see. Being in September, there was little tourist. Larry & Kelly, Georgetown, Texas.

Another unexpected castle (chateau). Set in the small town of Vitre. Centre of town looks very medieval but real. castle isn't that large and is really a museum but you get to expolore most of the interesting bits and get great views of the town. Well worth a couple of hours.

What I was going to find

Almost perfect in its multiple towers, the entrance to this castle invites you to imagine nobility and knights steolling the grounds. City Hall is located within the walls off the chateau. Quite an unusual gesture to its importance, I think. Can't remember anywhere else doing this. And in quite a large modern city for that matter.

We went to Vitre by accident, in our travels in France. We were not even a bit dissapointed, and I can tell you this castle is breathtaking.

Worth a trip!

We went to Vitre just to visit the Château and weren’t disappointed. It’s a great place to visit both inside and out and just big enough to not be boring or overwhelming. It was free for under 18s bad only €6 per adult so good value.
There are info leaflets in both French and English and toilets on site (Which we found had to find in Vitre).
Vitre itself is a very pretty medieval town with tiny cobbled streets and shops and restaurants without the hoards of tourists of Mount St Michelle. We really enjoyed our visit and would go again.

Very enjoyable couple of hours

My schoolgirl French came in handy as the gentleman in the ticket office spoke no English; nevertheless we understood each other and I walked away with a laminated guide and two tickets for the museum.
You need to be able to climb steps and be confident on spiral staircases to navigate the museum, but it's worth it. All the displays are worded in French, however there are laminated guides to each room in both French and English, which made the experience more enjoyable as we could understand more.
Great views over the medieval town and environs are obtained from the walls and windows, but it is kind of strange to be walking past the working civic offices also housed in the Chateau as you work your way around.
Would recommend if you have an hour or so spare in the town.

a nice way to spend an hour

Enjoyed our visit. As a previous reviewer mentioned, there is no information about the history of the chateau as you are walking round. Which is a shame. Not too expensive to visit. Some lovely views over Vitre.
