Since I was little and learned about the special, 5-gaited Icelandic horse, it has been a dream of mine to tölt in Iceland. Lýtingsstaðir was the perfect place to make that happen. I wish we could have done a longer tour, but I was with my dad who is a less experienced rider, so we did the 2-hour riding tour. For me, this was the best part of our trip to Iceland. Evelyn, the farm owner, gave me a tölting lesson, and was wonderful to be with the whole time. It was also special to see components of the working Icelandic farm, her sheep dog, meet one of her Icelandic stallions, and learn about traditional turf houses. Thank you so much Evelyn! I am already planning my trip back.

We did a fantastic horse ride with Antonia for 2 hours. We were a group of no to little experienced riders. Nevertheless we felt very comfortable and secure throughout the ride due to the good guidance we got.
It took probably a lot of effort to keep an eye on us, but we also did have a nice chat and were taught some basics of riding.

The ride itself was through a wonderful landscape with fields and rivers, which we crossed.

Totally recommendable!

Going on the "Horses and Heritage" tour was the most moving and memorable experience my husband and I did during our 17 days in Iceland! When we arrived with our fantastic tour guide, Lilia, we were warmly welcomed by the family farm's owners: Sveinn and Evelyn. Evelyn then walked with us to "The Old Stable" that she had built by a local expert in the traditional turf manner and filled with antique tools and equipment. Two friendly horses were in there as well. We also saw another traditional turf structure that was used as a holding pen for horses. Evelyn has a fascinating story to tell every step of the way and answered all of our questions about Icelandic horses and farming in Iceland. Next we took an hour-long trail ride on gentle Icelandic horses with our guide, Stephanie, who was very personable and knowledgeable. We even crossed a shallow stream and saw how sure-footed these horses are! When we returned, Evelyn had soft drinks and trays of delicious home-baked snacks for us in another building. Evelyn played a wonderful video on the Icelandic horses -- past and present. The time just flew by and throughout, we were learning so much about these amazing horses and how Evelyn opened up a working farm to become an extraordinary experience for others to understand and enjoy.

Many thanks for your excellent review Sophie. It was a pleasure to welcome you on our farm for the Horses&Heritage program and a great feed back like yours is a big thank you for the work and passion we put into our project. All the best to both of you!

I participated in this year's "Saga Tour", a 6-day tour that includes daily horseback rides, including a two-day riding tour with a night in a cabin. Evelyn (our tour leader and the stable's owner) was a gracious host and knows A LOT about the valley (Sagafjordur), which also made this trip very educational. The horses were all friendly and pleasant to ride, most of them effortlessly switching to the famous "Tolt" gait when the pace warranted it. Along with the gorgeous views, this made all rides fun.
I would highly recommend the trips offered at Lytingsstadir if you're looking for the true Icelandic experience. In June (when I visited), the weather was chillier than in mainland Europe at the time, but mostly pleasant with little rain. Riding past remote farms, glacial rivers, and a lot of sheep on the iconic horse (NOT pony :P) that is so integral to this country's culture was the best summer vacation and adventure I booked in a long time.

We visited Lytingsstadir for a 1 hour ride with our guide Sophia, and we had a fabulous experience! Our children (ages 6&10) loved riding the horses and felt very safe with Sophia’s instructions. We were able to ride right across a small river and our guide took a great family portrait. Highly recommended!

First time riding a horse. Our guide / riding instructor, Lisa, did a great job introducing us to the basic of horse riding. It helps that she is an actual riding instructor too. There was only me and my husband in our little group, and the horses are really patient with us - we started out sitting all wrong, with our weight all over the place, and I swear my horse, Dory, was snorting at me and giving the evil eye to actually ride him properly. Our guide was also really patient, taking time to explain the ins and outs of working on a horse farm, educating us about horses and the general lay of the land that we were riding. We experienced the tolt, and a full on gallop at certain points as well. The view from horseback is definitely different from hiking or from the car.

It was my niece’s 14th birthday and we really wanted to do a horse ride. Not many providers offering winter rides in November. I emailed Lytingsstadir the night before; Evelyn responded to my request that night and offered to take us in the morning. We had a fantastic ride! Such a beautiful location and Evelyn was friendly and gracious. She has been in business for 20 years and her experience shows. She was very knowledgeable and offered us a lot of local insight. There are 2 settlement style turf houses on the property which were very cool to see as well. Highly recommend this company if you’re looking to do any riding in the north!
