This is a memorial near to some shopping area so you are going to see it anyway. Sad place to remember a not long time ago.

Return to the Past

I viisted here briefly recently as I had read the story about the devastating earhtquake that struck Tangshan resulting in the deaths of so many people. It is a sobbing experience to stop, reflect and think that so many lives were lost that early morning when the quake struck with such amazing force. I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel--an easy walk to this special sight that honors and recognizes those who died.

Good for non-smoggy days

Good place to walk around. They really put effort into adding lakes and forests near the monument square. There's an aquarium there, too, along with some kid's stuff and exercise stuff.

Lots of vendors with go-karts, robot walker suits, ring tosses, and shooting games. Pay money and get a chance to win a ceramic vase or cup.

Remembering those who lost their lives

A sad piece of history and a sobering experience to imagine a quake hitting at 3:42 am. The memorial hall was closed at the time of my visit and probably would have made the site visit more informative but when in Tangshan its a worth the visit to acknowledge this horrible event. Across the street is the Intercontinental Hotel which was a nice venue to grab a coffee.

Tangshan Earthquake Memorial
May 2016 • Business
The Tangshan Memorial is in the middle of a large concrete park. It's location is convenient, right in the middle of the 2 largest shopping centers in Tangshan. Unfortunately, besides older women dancing in the area at night, there's not much else besides the monument itself to look at.

The square is in the center of Tangshan and it is nice to walk around and a good place to learn about the earthquake.

A sobering piece of history

Incredible to think that this event happened only 40 years ago. The Tangshan people have certainly gone through a lot and experienced amazing change over that time

Appalled by the Monument
May 2014 • Business
This half-mile-long monument is even more magnificent than the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D. C. It's truly a sacred site for the alive to pay tribute to the dead. I really hope there could be a platform in its front for the visitors to lay flowers or wreaths, at least on certain days of the year.

..but even more dust.

The memorial hall and the monument square deliver the same message and have the same "quality".
The monument square is nice in the late evenings for a stroll before bed. Watching the older people dance and young people have a nice time. That is, of you are around anyway.
