Our guide took us to this market. Since we arrived here in the afternoon it was empty. We stopped at a fish booth, and he provided us with information on some of the local fish that the vendor was selling. We went to several fish markets on our cruise, but it was interesting to see a different variety. Under the circumstances I likely would have chosen to skip this market.

Although the market’s architecture is a remarkable example of an iron and brick construction, what seems to attract most people are the glaze tile panels on the outside walls; those depict the early economic sectors of the region and also some of the city’s monuments. Enjoy!

Not only is this place authentic Portuguese, used for decades, you can get the greatest food here. Since we rented an apartment, and ate out dinners at restaurants, we came here to get our food for breakfast and lunch.
There is everything you need. Bread, lettuces, cheeses, meats(and they will slice them for you), tomatoes, veggies, and all the fruit you would need.
Simply the best place to load up on essentials.
There is a Spar across the street for other things.

This is an old town market (early XXth Century). On the outside, it is decorated with painted scenes of rural life and of architectural ans scenic highlights from the province of Ribatejo.
A fine building, a neat place for a stroll. It stands between two gardens, next to the Courthouse. You can have a snack ir a coffee. Behind the market you have the world famous Tasca do Quinzena.

The Santarém Municipal Market is both a fully functioning municipal market and also a historical tourist attraction.
The market before 1928 operated outdoors. In those days, as at present, the farmers in the vicinity would come here to sell what they produced.
In 1928, a famous Portuguese architect, Cassiano Branco, mostly known for his design of the Café Imperio in Lisbon and the Hotel Britânia in the same city, completed the coverage of the Santarém municipal market. This municipal market is a good example of modern architecture and with special interest are the tiles panels from the early nineteenth century on the walls around the grounds.
The panels illustrate the diverse Ribatejanas landscapes and methods of agricultural production, their architecture and nature of the time is still of great relevance today.

If you're traveling to Santarém with lots of spare time, please don't forget to visit the town's market! Its façade is covered with glazed tiles panels depicting the country life and traditional activities from ancient times. Besides that you can't miss the fresh products sold there! It's a very interesting atmosphere..

Santarém is a very cute city, but the letters with Santarém look very modern, too much for the city, which is beautiful and with history.

As you might already know, Portugal is famous for its fantastic tiles! At "Mercado Municipal de Santarém" you'll find 63 tile panels, perfect representatives of the Portuguese mastership in manufacturing the traditional blue and white tile panels, picturing scenes of Portugal's history, culture and legends! Awesome! Santarém's public market was inaugurated in 1930, on the same location of the old open-air farmer's market, and was totally renovated in 1988. Easily reachable at Santarém's downtown, take your time and stroll along the magnificent tile panels! Enjoy!
