Museu Diocesano de Santarém.
This museum in integrated in the “Cathedral Trail”, and located on the other side of the street, this when you are at the Igreja "Nossa Senhora de Piedade".
I was there at the noon time so everything was closed, and I could not wait for more than one hour, I know the Portuguese way of living, they never arrive on time.
The building seems to be a very special place, and the museum is more for the kind of people or tourist who are looking after the privilege of seeing Rare Religious Art Works or Art pieces who are even unknown.
All of this in the Cathedralike complex in the urban part of Santarem, a nice city who has more to visit.

It was a Saturday morning - my wife and I entered this Jesuit church and historical Museum - no other person present - even by nearly an hour later as we exited after taking a close interest in all the objects in the beautifully arranged museum. In any other city there would be busloads of tourists lined up ready to enter - or is this the charm of Santarém - that there aren't. Whatever - a pity indeed that more visitors are not here to visit this truly amazing Cathedral. Entering the church proper - and looking upwards - it was as if a vision of Heaven presented itself - the entire ceiling painted (think La Capella Sistina of the Vatican in Roma) and as well - similarly - the ceiling above the altar area, too. And the chapel places along each side - all marvels of sculpture and decoration and religious tributes to the Holy figures of the Bible and to important saints - including Francis Xavier - who one lived in the region of Japan where I lived (450+ years after him, albeit)! After visiting here - walk the kilometre or so straight down one or other of the narrow shopping streets leading from the other side of the square - to the Jardim Las Portas do Sol - and look down from this former fortress over the Rio Tejo (The Tagus River - flowing all the way from Spain (through Aranjuez) and the flat plains beyond/around. Sit in the cool breeze beneath the leafy trees and ponder the craftspeople of this region who created such a cathedral! Free city WiFi is available in the Square outside and throughout the old historic city - but whether inside this site I am not sure.

The museum was very nice and had some great sacred artworks worth of note. I particularly appreciated the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence very much alike to the very famous one painted by Titian in Venice.
The Cathedral itself which used to be a Jesuit church is lavishly decorated with splendid marbles and paintings, typical of the Jesuits (see the church of Sao Roque in Lisbon).
So well worth a visit.

Today, September 5, 2023, I stood in front of the door, I rang the bell at 11:30 a.m. and later at 2:00 p.m. and no one answered. There was no notice on the door that it was closed for some reason. There were other tourists there who left just as disappointed as I was

Santarém is one of the oldest cities of Portugal and right at its Praça Sá da Bandeira, you'll find the Cathedral complex ("Sé de Santarém") and the magnificent "Museu Diocesano de Santarém". Visiting this beautiful museum is a must for all those that appreciate religious art. Its collections of paintings, sculptures and Portuguese tiles stand among the best ones in the Catholic world. Check the temporary exhibitions, as well as the permanent collections. The museum is opened seven days a week, but is closed at noon time. Check the hours before going. Enjoy!

Fantastic Museum and Cathedral, superbly presented by the Museum's own guide.
It is worth paying attention to the various themed events that are organized throughout the year.
