The Portas do Sol is a garden delimited by ancient walls, has one of the most important viewpoints of the Ribatejana region in the city of Santarém.
Here entered D. Afonso Henriques who took Santarém from the Moors in 1147 during the Christian Reconquest.
Today a space with restaurant and 1 bar.
Here several events take place, having been the last Adiafa of the Tagus.
A beautiful garden to spend a day.

This place is well sign posted from the old town, and is easy to park at. Lovely peaceful place, with well kept gardens. The cafe and restaurant where closed, but it was a Monday in early January . Dogs are welcome but must be on leads, we had a nice walk around the walls, with fabulous views of the river Tejo.

A pleasant place in Santarém with a gorgeous view of the "lezíria" (marshland). Easy to park. Esplanade.

Quiet and serene, this small corner had Roman ruins, bit hard to find as they are covered and behind a high fence on the right side as you walk through the main gates. Great views over the Targus from the old stone battlements. Great photo ops. Little outdoor C has a great little lunch toasted cheese and ham sandwich and beer for about 4euros. Comfy outdoor seating and free wifi.

We happened to visit the park on a brilliant cool Sunday May morning and it was stunning and beautiful. The church bells were ringing, lovely river views, castle ruins, locals taking a walk. Enjoyed it.

The Castle is a marvel. A quiet garden surrounded by high walls and romantic towers. However the view is the deal braker. The Tagus, wide and lazy, and the fertile plain fields all around it.
The view is gorgeous at all times. But when the time comes of the flooding, the view is hypnotic. A see of golden waters invades the fiels for miles and miles, the slow flowing waters reflect the pink light of dawn or the sunset violet. A sea of pain and distress, whole streets of drenched houses, their red rooftops signaling that there lived a family whom the flood has robbed of their home... rough beauty. Quite impressive.

Very peaceful sight and location. Amazing view. You can wander around a bit going from one castle point to another by taking pictures. Then you can relax and have a drink.

Interesting view of Tagus river from this place although this needs a little touch up from the local government to improve.

One cafe is available in this garden and the other restaurant has been closed due to several complaints about its cleanliness.

Unfortunately no nice accommodation nearby for tourists

These ae the remains of the old Santarém’s fortification. In fact, it is a garden surrounded by a few fortification walls. Although nice, most people go there for the magnificent views over the Tagus river and its wide banks. Enjoy!
