Best time to visit this place is during April to Jun when the Orchids are in full bloom. Very small place but beautiful collection of varieties of Orchids. You need to buy entry ticket to visit inside. Located adjacent to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology in Gangtok. You get to see almost 250 varities of orchids. Beautiful place for photography of flower lovers.

Name of this Sanctuary it self suggest the specialty about this place. The entire Sanctuary is full of Orchid plants but it needs a lot of maintenance. I saw around 30-40% plants doesn't t had much flowers. So it was looking dull.

I was looking forward to seeing various Sikkimese exotic orchids, October and November being blooming season. To my disappointment in the small exhibit more than half the plants were not orchids and the orchids were for most, not in very good shape. Only 3 or 4 different and common species where exhibited.
I saw many more species of exquisite orchids just driving along country roads.

There is nothing there and none of the locals knew anything about it. After a lot of searching we did find it. It was locked and looked like a wasteland. It is no more functional.

Tried to find this place
Asked around in the area of deorali near the tibetology museum, people said it was closed, finished.
However, ended up going to the monastery up there, and met the lama.

Both me and my wife are great fans of the Orchids and hence we decided to go to this sanctuary and needless to say, we were not disappointed.

here were more than 200 assorted varieties of Orchids and we throughly enjoyed each of them. We also found a few lily orchids which were too hard to resist and so we bought a few saplings home. We would surely recommend even new visitor to Gangtok to kindly visit this small but very serene and beautiful Sanctuary!!

The sanctuary is vast stretch of forested land that houses over 450 different varieties of orchids. All of these flowers sell at very expensive rates abroad.

This stop was on our way back to Gangtok but I don't know if I would have gone out of my way to see it as not many were in bloom when we were there. I can only imagine how amazingly beautiful it is though when the greenhouse is filled with orchids in bloom.

Visited the orchid show, was a beautiful display of orchids. Took lots of photo's. Shame could not buy any plants as we were in a hurry. Gangtok has beautiful pagodas and scenery, so it was a pleasant day away from traffic and noise.
