I shopped here in last September. After travelling on a tour through India and only seeing either high end luxury chains or knick knack stores, this shop was a relief. It offers something for everyone - clothing, jewelry, furniture, ceramic, bags, linens, etc. I was able to buy some modestly priced jewelry as gifts, and some beautiful ceramics and an antique bowl to bring home. The owner even had my purchases delivered to my hotel. She was wonderful and the other employees were great too. Definitely take the time to find this shop if you are in Pondicherry.

Limited variety and items, exorbitantly priced. Managed to pick up similar items at one third the price at a not so up market shop.

The products displayed are mostly produced in Aurovile and the prices are same in Janaki as well as any other Auroville store. So there is no question of getting any thing at a cheaper price any where else.

To find another shop with as nice a selection of elegant, high quality and sophisticated clothes, you must go out to Auroville, 30 minutes outside of town. Janaki has a large selection of women's clothes, some jewelry, shoes and scarves and even a small men's section where I bought three shirts for Christmas for the men in my life. Beautifully finished in lightweight, gorgeous fabric perfect for summer weather. The woman who runs the shop is both the perfect model for the beautiful clothes and an excellent businesswoman. When I asked to exchange one of the men's shirts for a smaller size, she honored my request instantly and in good humor, which I appreciated. My only complaint was the heat. The store has no AC and it would have been far nicer to try on these lovely clothes if there had been a fan in the dressing room, as there are in many other shops. Otherwise, a beautiful place to shop. (And there's an nice gift shop/gallery on the second floor, as well.)

We went to this place as it was hardly 20 steps from our hotel. Having seen the colorful shop, we reached 15 minutes prior to the closing time. As soon as we entered, a group of ladies told it is closed. I mentioned the time written is 7:30 pm and also you shop says open . They directly said we need time to wind up things. Even after telling it is our last night here and we just wanted to look around the shop once, they didn't bother.

Please be courteous to your guests.

WOW ! Finally, after two days of searching for some good shopping in Pondicherry, I happened upon this treasure trove of stylish women's clothing, jewellery and lifestyle options. There is a social conscience associated with this store and a really unique array of great hand crafted but very stylish goods. I particularly like the jewellery made by disadvantaged women in nearyby villages.

Janaki, located in the French town of Pondicherry, is a great shop if you ar elooking for something special for yourself or a gift. Besides amazing sustainable fashion from various Indian labels (Upasana, Naushad Ali, Ekmatra etc.) you can find pottery and furniture from Auroville, bags, natural cosmetics, beautiful handmade jewellery and much more. There's even a small corner just for kids. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Stop by if you are in Pondicherry.

Janaki is a beautifully presented store right in the Freanch city of Pondicherry. It features some of the best quality products sourced from the Auroville community. It has something for everyone who is looking for something extraordinary in the area. The most extraordinary is propbably the furniture because this work is unique and will onlt be found in Aurovllle itself. Janaki has been conceieved and founded by the person who operates probably the best textile project in the Auroville community. She also knows how to present a retail store very well.
