Entrance to a place of religious worship
Dec 2020
On december 24th with family members i visited this well located place of worship in town. Practically, the omily is made in Tamil language in front of its many devotees. The entrance is impressive through the large portals with a large interior courtyard. The architecture of the whole is solid and clean. the benches are well aligned with distance. the decoration is well distributed on the walls with statues. the altar of god is immensely flowered on the occasion of Christmas.
Its also a place to celebrate catholic marriages

A spot of France in India
Feb 2020 • Couples
Wonderfully preserved slice on France in India. Very pretty church which is beautifully preserved. In contrast to other churches in the area both the interior and exterior retail a simple classic look and feel.

Pretty, Peaceful Cathedral
Dec 2019
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is also known as Samba Kovil and is the parent church of the Catholic diocese for Pondicherry. It was originally built in 1692 but was demolished by the Dutch, rebuilt, demolished again, rebuilt, and demolished by the British. It was rebuilt in 1791 in its present shape. The Bell tower was built later. A loft was added in 1905, and parts have been remodeled in 1970 and 1987.

The church is light and bright with a simple and pretty center altar. The paintings around the church are very colorful. Windows have colored panels - no stained glass pictures. There is a Virgin Mary grotto and a beautiful silver statue of Christ in front of the cathedral.

Having been visited by Mother Theresa, this church is one of Pondicherry's landmarks and oldest tourist sites. Masses take place in Tamil and English. While we visited, we were lucky enough to hear the choir practicing.

Lovely Place!
Dec 2019 • Couples
It's one of the most famous places to visit if you are in Puducherry. We went on the Christmas Eve and it was so well lit and vibe of the place was so much energising.
Just one this. The entrance can be kept more tidy by the authorities. As it is a Holy place, it should be kept clean and tidy.

Beautiful Cathedral built in 1789
Jan 2020 • Couples
A christian church was first built here in 1689 so a long history. After several demolitions the existing church was built in 1791 and has served as a catholic cathedral since then. It is beautifully painted in white, which stands out perfectly against a blue Tamil sky. We went on Sunday morning when a service was in full progress and the building absolutely full. The choir was singing Tamil hymns wonderfully. A very uplifting experience. Inside the church is fully renovated and in pristine condition. Definitely worth a visit.

328th Annual feast of the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception
Dec 2019
The feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the parochial feast of the Cathedral Church, Puducherry, is celebrated every year on the 8th of December. Celebration of this feast in the Latin rite commenced in the Eastern Church during the seventh century, and in the 18th century it became a feast of the universal Church, after the solemn proclamation of Pope Pius IX. It is now recognized as a solemnity.
One of the oldest Parishes of Pondicherry, with the present population of around 10500 believers, is nearly 328-year-old, originally built in 1692 by the Jesuit Refugees priests, who came to Pondicherry in 1687. After its first destruction in 1693, a second one was built by them in 1699, which was also demolished very soon. Since those Jesuit priests used to be called as “Saint Paul (to be pronounced in French) priests”, in due course, the church came to be known popularly in the local Franco Tamil usage as the Sampau/Sampa Koil (Saint+Pau). Later, the Carnatic Mission built a third Church in 1735, which was also destroyed later by the British in 1761.
The present Parish Church, about which 196 friends have already reviewed (and a few more scattered along with the reviews of certain other Churches in Puducherry) as of now, is also the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore, and is actually the fifth one, built in 1791. We are proud to belong originally to this parish for more than four generations.
