About Kallialay Surf School
Juan and Samai Reboul, born in a small village off the coast of Spain, were not introduced to the world of surfing until they moved to Auroville, India in 95, at the ages of 9 and 10. It was here that a group of surfing pioneers allowed them their own boards with which they could plunge into their newfound passion, unaware that this would lead them towards their present situation. As years went by, their enthusiasm for surfing grew and soon they found themselves with a notorious reputation for their loud voices, large fin-like noses and the habit of ditching school to catch some waves. Today, their old teachers still laugh about how, on several occasions, they unsuccessfully attempted to drag the two boys off their boards and into class (the brothers were apparently oblivious to the shouting figures on the beach). Soon Juan and Samai realised that they wanted to make their passion into their profession, at which point they started giving classes to children and teenagers of Auroville and Pondicherry. Any lapses in their teaching abilities were filled when they helped out at their friends' surf school in south-west France. Gathered from their various experiences in the world of surf, Kallialay Surf School (KASS) was created in January 2009 as one of the first surf schools on the south east coast of India. Having surfed these waters for the past 14 years Juan and Samai know all about their surf spot. The peers' sand banks provide waves suitable for both beginners as well as advanced surfers. The brothers' knowledge of English, French, Spanish and Tamil along with professional, imported equipment (foam-boards with rubber fins) gives beginners from all around the world a perfect opportunity to catch their first waves and enjoy it in the heat and bustle of South India.

If you want to learn surfing in a highly motivating and fun environment, then please go ahead and make your bookings with Kallialay Surf School. I had just one session due to my short trip to Pondicherry, but I can assure you that I’ll come back again, purely to experience being a Kallialay student. Juan was my coach and we had an absolute blast in the ocean. He made me feel extremely comfortable even when I panicked looking at the waves, and five minutes in, I knew I had nothing to worry about, with Juan by my side. All of the instructors were really warm, friendly and professional. Juan was not only motivating, but also exceptionally patient and approachable. He always encouraged, and I got to catch some waves in my first session! If you’re in Pondicherry, Kallialay surf school is a must visit. Book your session and fall in love with the waves!

I'm not going to lie - probably one of the nicest schools I've been to! I took the 10 day surf course and I really couldn't have asked for a better experience. I struggled quite a bit trying to get up on my board and kept falling into the water for most part of my course. I wanted to give up so bad and throw in the towel, fully convinced that this wasn't for me. Thankfully, I had Juan as my instructor/part time therapist 😂. He is so incredibly patient (I probably tested his patience a little too much), super encouraging and knowledgeable and so passionate about what he does that it made me not want to give up. The team on the whole is amazing and so fun and I had a blast! Now, I can proudly say that I can ride the tiny waves to shore and I shall return to learn how to ride the bigger ones! If you love water spending time in the water, or even if you don't, and love having a good time, give this place a try! I promise you it's worth it!
