This was an awesome place! I happen to be driving by and decided to pull in for a quick break. Ended up staying for 4 hours! Would definitely visit again and highly recommend it. Just be careful after rain as the tracks were very muddy!...More

Busy and popular walking and cycling walkway along the fabulous scenic gorge. Plenty of walkways, a train ride, and waterfall close by. Nice day's outing. Historical Gold Mine area.

Spare some thought to those pioneers a generation ago, who carved many kilometers through solid rock to build the Karangahake George which It is now part of the main road between Auckland and Waihi via Paeroa. In those spartan conditions you wonder how the pioneers...More

We took 2 hikes here- the "windows" hike and the "tunnel" hike. Both were accessed by a pedestrian suspension bridge, and went through native bush through steep mountains next to a clean clear river. The windows hike through an old gold mine railroad tunnel had...More

We are not tour operators , we are farmers from the Uk with a son and grandchildren in New Zealand . The area is real walking country.

We love cycling and it appears this would be a great place to cycle on our trip. Are bikes easy to rent at the Gorge or do people rent them somewhere nearby and bring them in? Also how much of the area can you cycle through?

Hi, bikes are easy to rent in the towns along the rail trail, we rented ours from our starting point at Thanes, but you could also rent them from Paeroa near the Gorge. Just google the rail trail people, I think it was... More
