If crowded beaches with sun loungers for hire and beach bars aren’t your thing - sotavento is the alternative you are looking for.
Stunningly beautiful and expansive, you can relax and enjoy some peace and quiet and privacy.

Naturalists flock to Sotavento for this reason.

Free parking is available down an unpaved road off of FV2.

Very large wide clean safe beach with usual facilities. Lifeguards, blue flag, road access, close to hotels, can be quote windy, tale water/sun cream/wind break, towels, and you mobile. Some shops and ATM's, Santander free to use ATM is in Costa Calma just behind beach hotels near shops on main road.

We ate twice at this restaurant and each time the food was amazing as was the service. The staff are friendly and attentive. We chose to have the tapas menu, which provides a good selection of different dishes and a drink. Our daughter who can be a little fussy loved this menu and was happy to even try the sardines. In fact we enjoyed the tapas menu so much we visited a second time. This restaurant has a lovely view over the harbour and well worth a visit.

The beach is over 5 km long so you are never going to be in a crowded area. The tide leaves lagoons which gradually drain at low tide, these are full of small fish and shallow enough to wade through. The sandbar runs for quite a way along the beach.
There is a surfing area but plenty of places to swim.

The nudists have the self confidence to sunbathe anywhere on Fuerteventura as it is not against the law.

Disclaimer upfront: have been to Costa Calma / Sotavento for kite surfing in the last week of March, which is not as good in terms of strength and consistency of wind as the summer months, and we were not very lucky with 3 days of wind during the week of our stay.

1. Tides

This is tidal lagoon, which means you need to know the height and timing of the tides to time your kiting sessions. Typically you can get 3-4 hours of surfing around a tide. There are two deeper pockets within the bay (roughly in the middle and to the south end) that stay sufficiently deep for maybe an hour more, but most of the lagoon gets drained within an hour of the high tide. The southern part that holds the water longer gets a fair amount of current, but that is typically manageable.

This is tricky in the less windy months, as you may have wind picking up in the afternoon (from c.3pm), but because there's low tide, you won't get much kiting time that day.

2. Kite rescue problematic

Rene Egli only offers rescue service in front of their centre and only to their customers (i.e. you need to either do a course, or rent equipment from them as an independent rider). I'm not aware there is any alternative rescue option.

If you have your own equipment and only need rescue cover, they do not provide a weekly cover and will charge you 50 euros per trip. On that basis, if you want to avoid the risk, you need to stick to the lagoon.

3. Wind

The wind is mostly offshore in this place, channeled/accelerated through the hills (which is why it is typically stronger than anywhere else around). But this means you either go for the lagoon, or take the risk Rene Egli will charge you (if you don't have the rescue cover).

4. Facilities

Good facilities around Rene Egli base. There's another "base" on the south end of the lagoon, but it is still work in progress and has some way to catch up. Having said that, you can get something to eat and there's a toilet (mostly working).

5. Conclusion

The lagoon is great for flat water fun, but unless you're a customer of RE and can get insurance, you're limited to high water times in the lagoon and you need to match that with the wind, which can be tricky.

Overall, I would recommend going north to Corralejo and kiting at Flag Beach, which has a much better safety cover (30 euro for up to two weeks total), has waves in addition to flat water (although there is shore break you need to get through) and even if you're beginner, you can get a session on a boat that takes you out and you have unlimited space to practice body drags, etc.

Superb vast sandy beach, never crowded! You can walk for miles. Lagoons form between the sea and shore as the tide comes in - popular with kite-surfers while the surf boarders go out to the sea proper. Loved the wildlife - the birds, flowers, salt marsh and dune plants and Barbary Ground Squirrels. Spectacular views from the tops of the dunes. Has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Oh, and clothes are decidedly optional!
