- Shaun LClanfield, United Kingdom2,869 contributionsCalm tranquil beach backed by hotelsHas always been a mystery to us so decided to spend some time exploring when we visited the south of the island. Really lovely stretch of beach with many a hotel and apartment block towards the back of the beach. Found a couple of small shopping centres but couldnt locate lots of bars and restaurants. I'm guessing its a more all-inclusive crowd that enjoy the resort. It was nice for a couple of hours with the beach really being the star.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2024

Beautiful Aya, with a sandy island area even when the tide rises. The worst thing is that there are many days when it is very windy, there are many people Kate surfing. Quite a large sandy area. Quite ample parking. It has a toilet and lifeguards

Superb beach, very large at low tide, very well exposed. The major advantage, regardless of its location, is that we really don't step on each other! Another advantage: after each tide, you find a “virgin” beach and you feel alone in the world!

Wonderful and to visit at low tide when lagoons form. It has no sunbeds and umbrellas service but there is a bathroom (in the afternoon it was indecent and without paper, but already it is something there is!). It is a place of impressive size, definitely worth a visit!

This beach is simply magnificent. We never tire of taking photos. It's splendid. Not too crowded a treat. The only disappointment was not enough wind so no kites or wing foils were out. Beach that I recommend and easy to access.

The nudists have the self confidence to sunbathe anywhere on Fuerteventura as it is not against the law.

Disclaimer upfront: have been to Costa Calma / Sotavento for kite surfing in the last week of March, which is not as good in terms of strength and consistency of wind as the summer months, and we were not very lucky with 3 days of wind during the week of our stay.
1. Tides
This is tidal lagoon, which means you need to know the height and timing of the tides to time your kiting sessions. Typically you can get 3-4 hours of surfing around a tide. There are two deeper pockets within the bay (roughly in the middle and to the south end) that stay sufficiently deep for maybe an hour more, but most of the lagoon gets drained within an hour of the high tide. The southern part that holds the water longer gets a fair amount of current, but that is typically manageable.
This is tricky in the less windy months, as you may have wind picking up in the afternoon (from c.3pm), but because there's low tide, you won't get much kiting time that day.
2. Kite rescue problematic
Rene Egli only offers rescue service in front of their centre and only to their customers (i.e. you need to either do a course, or rent equipment from them as an independent rider). I'm not aware there is any alternative rescue option.
If you have your own equipment and only need rescue cover, they do not provide a weekly cover and will charge you 50 euros per trip. On that basis, if you want to avoid the risk, you need to stick to the lagoon.
3. Wind
The wind is mostly offshore in this place, channeled/accelerated through the hills (which is why it is typically stronger than anywhere else around). But this means you either go for the lagoon, or take the risk Rene Egli will charge you (if you don't have the rescue cover).
4. Facilities
Good facilities around Rene Egli base. There's another "base" on the south end of the lagoon, but it is still work in progress and has some way to catch up. Having said that, you can get something to eat and there's a toilet (mostly working).
5. Conclusion
The lagoon is great for flat water fun, but unless you're a customer of RE and can get insurance, you're limited to high water times in the lagoon and you need to match that with the wind, which can be tricky.
Overall, I would recommend going north to Corralejo and kiting at Flag Beach, which has a much better safety cover (30 euro for up to two weeks total), has waves in addition to flat water (although there is shore break you need to get through) and even if you're beginner, you can get a session on a boat that takes you out and you have unlimited space to practice body drags, etc.

How far is nudist beach from costa calma town
Written January 16, 2019
In answer to your question regarding being nude on the beach. We found going nude is not far but on the main town beach itself at Costa Calma especially towards the south end. The beach is mainly clothed and busy but for the brave you can strip off and sunbathe in a discreet manner. With the tide out we have seen people walking nude from Costa calma main beach south over the rocks and you can go for miles passing lovely sandy coves where you find quite a few people enjoying the freedom of being naked. We would do a walk from Costa Calma all the way to Sotavento beach and back, quite a hike very nice and can be done naked if you like. Along the way you do pass many others walking most of who are not naked but there is no restriction if you like to be without clothes. There is a lovely beach cafe, mind you need to put something on if you want to use it.
