Large and Interesting

Good variety of exhibits from the local area. Marine section was my favourite with excellent exhibits related to the many shipwrecks and local marine industry. Excellent forestry and gum digging exhibits. Easy to spend 1 to 2 hours.

Worth a visit

Great to go up tho the museum, view over Dargaville, seeing the sweeping river. Gave a good look at the early history of the area with the large import of Dalmatians into the area mining the kauri gum and harvesting the kauri trees. Then showed the development of the boat building and shipping in the area. Fascinating. Great walk back to town.

Excellent museum, a must to visit, something for everyone
Apr 2021
Probably the best small museum I've ever seen. Wonderfully arranged and presented. Kauri, kauri gum, local boating history, local history from early days to now. Excellent staff. Deceptively bigger than it looks. Lots to look at and read. Fascinating memorabilia to muse over. Something for everyone. Makes Auckland Museum seem somewhat boring in comparison, perhaps its too big.

Best museum I have been to
Mar 2021
All of it. It had displays of all sorts of periods from early Maori to Dally gum diggers to swamp kauri recovery to world wars displays to the french terrorists in NZ. A great museum. Well worth the entry fee. Allow a good bit of time--it is much bigger than you might think !

Absolute insight into the local history
Feb 2021
We visited this museum not knowing what to expect, was actually a bit apprehensive as have visited other museums which turned out to be underwhelming.

However this proved to be a delightful visit!

This is a must visit place if you want to know the history of Dargaville and the Kauri industry, and the numerous gumdiggers of whom many are migrants. There is a room which showcases the actual shovels used by these gumdiggers who have since passed on. You could almost imagine how it was like through the way the exhibits and history are presented. It was impressive and there are several rooms showcasing private collections of different items, shipwrecks relics, genealogy and more.

You'll start at a room where you can watch a video on the harvesting of a huge kauri tree by Nelson Parker of Kaihu Kauri.

The staff are absolutely friendly and eager to chat with you.

At $35 for a family ticket it was worth the visit. I highly recommend all visitors to Dargaville to visit this museum!

You can also head out to have a picnic outside the museum overseeing Dargaville and enjoy the sights.

What an incredible place to visit. Friendly, helpful staff. So much interesting, historical stuff to check out. A few benches around the place were great because of the size of the museum.
A must see!!

Interesting History

Times were tough back then. The men worked hard and so no overweight people. All the machinery ( if they had any ) was very heavy. Danger was a daily issue.

Wonderful Glimpse Back in Time

Went on a Sunday and entry was free; locals dressed up in costume and the whole place was humming. Set up high the view out below to the river and beyond great. A large collection of largely European history in the area which was very interesting - great visual displays; a working steam engine designed for the kauri gum diggers was fascinating; Rainbow warrior mast prominent outside - highly recommend spending several hours here

Living History

Perched on top of a hill in Harding Park, Dargaville, the museum brings the past into the present with its collection of personalities and pieces that tell the story of Dargaville and the region.
Well worth a visit and the views of the surrounds are outstanding.
