I was in Erbil for few days, attending a conference. I needed some miscellaneous stuff (shaving foam, dark chocolate, the usual suspects ..).
I was staying in Cristal hotel, so I took a Taxi to Family mall (3000 Dinars) and enjoyed shopping there.
Pretty much a western style shopping mall with tens of shops (mostly Turkish brands) and some international names. Carrefour is quite spacious and has nice Kurdish products, the food court has the tastiest oriental pies (Malek El Meshal-tet) which is puff pastry topped with honey and nuts .. yummy
avoid the taxi drivers lined up in front of the mall and just climb up the flyover stairs to the other side of the street and pay half of what those guys ask for (Taxis are not metered, you have to ask about the fare before you ride.

I went there several times in the past 3 years and saw a lot of progress made. It is Ok by western standard and probably the most complete mall in Kurdistan if not in the entire Iraq. There is another mall (named Majidi) but not as many selections. You can get almost everything here. Lots of Turkish investment in the KRG as evidenced in the shops with Turkish items and brands as well the Turkish food stalls in the second floor food court. There is a cinema attached to the mall which is rare in Iraq. Many nice cafes to sit down and do some people watching. On weekends, it does get very crowded. So try to avoid that period.

This place doesn't have many nice stores but it is way too crowded. For some reason I just didn't feel very safe here not my favorite place to go.

The family mal is not bad. been there two times , went to the cinema there as well . Its has a indoor grocery store as well as electronics. Entering the mall you have to go through security that is the only bad thing.

Probably the best shopping mall in Erbil. Nice cinema. Not a big fan of shopping malls so I'll give it a 4.

Family mall, probably is the biggest mall so far in Erbil. Quite big in size with lot of attractions including shops, carrefour, food court, cinemas etc. The food options are bit limited (though there are many shops but mostly Arabic, turkish and fast food). Never been to cinemas but heard that they many. Too much rush outside the mall due to taxis. On week ends, it really gets crowded. If you want to have some serious shopping, do not visit on week end, unless you like crowded place. If you are not there for shopping and just want to have a look, keep an estimated time of one and half hour in mind.
Note: This review is based upon one time visit, please keep margin of lack of good observation.

My wife and I came here several times during our stay in Kurdistan. Good coffee shops and the service was very good. One reviewer was unhappy with the frisking at Carefour but we had the opposite experience. As far as the taxis out front, of course they will charge you more coming out of the mall. You have bags of stuff and no other options, lol. That's not a rip off that's entrepreneurship. Yes thy charge Westerners more. I would too as we generally have more disposable income than the average Kurd. We had a great time. There a little quirks everywhere you go. If those are all you focus on you will never enjoy travel. It's a good mall and better than many in the USA.
