A town to experience and enjoy peaceful and relaxing traditional life in Yangtze River delta
Feb 2018 • Family
A place where a tourist may spend a few hours to see around to have taste of typical old town in Yangtze River Delta and to try some unique and traditional food in town, but that is not what I recommend doing for serious tourists. Xinshi is an exceptional town for serious tourist to stay there for a night or two to experience and enjoy the life of people in old days in Yangtze River Delta region - having exceptionally good food for breakfast in the morning, wondering around on old stone street, having a cup of tea along the small river with a book or news papers in hand, having traditional food for lunch, walking around the old town after a nap and seeing a few old houses, walking a bit far to outside of the town and sitting on the bank of rivers to enjoy the country scenes of waters, having dinner of Xinshi food, finding a place to watch/listen Suzhou Pingtan, and having many more to experience and enjoy. Old Chinese life style rich in culture is slow-paced life style. If one just wants to see things after things and more things, Hangzhou and Shanghai are the places to go.

A small, older water town in Zhejiang province.
Mar 2015
This is a smaller water town about 2 hours away from Shanghai by bus. A little hard to get to unless you speak mandarin or traveling with a chinese friend. Old buildings, not a whole lot to see. Snacks and food are limited here. I did buy a silk duvet for less than i would in Shanghai. Easy to completely walk the town within 1-1.5 hours including stopping for a snack or two.

An exceptionally well-preserved ancient town.
Dec 2014 • Solo
Xinshi is an ancient town with 1600 years' history, located one and a half hours ride from Huzhow City.

It is an under discovered and under developed old town, much smaller and less famous than many other water towns in Zhejiang Province. I have visited lots of “ancient towns” in China, many of them are too commercialized and crowded. Xinshi is an exceptionally well-preserved ancient town. The beautiful scene impresses me very much. It is really a picture-perfect water town.

Everything is within walking distance. You can take an one to two hours stroll along the river. There are very few stores, bars, coffee shops and restaurants in the town. The spot is suitable for artists, architectural lovers and tourists searching for peace and relaxation.
