This Turkish minaret dates back to when the Turks ruled the city for 27 years. They certainly left their Mark! The minaret is topped with a statue of Mary of the Apocalypse stepping on a crescent moon and faces a Russian Orthodox Church. The church is owned by the Vatican but is a Polish Catholic Church.

When the Ottoman Turks conquered the town they built a minaret over a chapel attached to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, which they turned into a mosque. When the Turks were banished nearly a hundred years later, a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed on top of the minaret on the Muslim crescent and the mosque became a church again. According to our guide there was an agreement when the Turks were defeated, that the minaret would not be destroyed. This is probably the only such example in the world now.
The tower is round with slit windows and the stone work is in good condition with restoration work being done back in the '60s. There are patterns carved in the lower stone work.
This along with the Cathedral is well worth a visit for something so unique.

Turkish Minaret. Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine. When the Turks arrived, they put a Minaret next to the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. After the Turks were later defeated, there was an agreement to not destroy the minaret - after all, the Turks had not destroyed the church. There was simply a statue of the Virgin Mary placed on top.

The base of the minaret has carvings and the minaret is in excellent shape. It appears there was reconstruction work at some point in the past. Such as the mortar, but it's not obvious to the casual eye.

One of many gems in the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi.

When the Turks occupied the town in the 17th century, they used this baroque church as a mosque and built a minaret in front of it. After they got expelled, the Christians left the minaret as it was and just put a Mary statue on top of it. Good idea and looks great.

Many agree it's an unusual combination - minaret and Virgin Mary. Indeed, the history behind the minaret reflects the rich history of the city itself. The minaret is 40-meter high and is a typical example of such buildings.

The statue is made of brass and silver alloy. It's hollow - to reduce weight.

The minaret is placed at the main entrance of the Peter & Paul Cathedral, so when you visit the whole complex, take a look at it.

It is really wonder to see the minaret right inside the christian monastery. It's cool that something like that is now in our country. I recommend to everyone to see it.
