We had a fabulous tasting with Kym, the owner, right before closing. He went the extra mile to introduce and explain many of his products. We’re experienced wine tasters 😂 and were thoroughly impressed. It obviously worked as we bought a case. Kym made us feel like mates whilst still being a responsible host. Will definitely be back.

We were two couples walking among the wineries in the area. We started at Torlesse and had a great wine tasting then returned before closing to continue our tasting. Everyone was friendly, helpful, humorous. Not only did we enjoy some great wines and company, we were able to purchase 8 bottles which were thoughtfully (and thankfully) delivered to our accomodation several kilometres away while we walked back. Great visit - we shall be back!

A family run winery in Waipara, about 1 hour North of Christchurch. Kim and Maggie Rainer produce wonderful wines, particularly Pinot Noir, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, for you to sample and offer very nice light meals to accompany them. Their premium "Omihi Road" range is outstanding.

Wonderful hospitality from Torlesse winery, and some affordable wine that’s really worth trying. After an appalling experience at Pegasus, it was so refreshing to find great, knowledgeable staff and a warm welcome at Torlesse. Don’t miss it!

Just visited as part of a winery tour for my daughter’s 21st. Completed shocked and appalled at the (male) owner’s disgusting attitude and comments towards women. Avoid and boycott this place. This is not OK, and hiding behind his Australian nationality as an excuse for this behaviour is just weak. Shame on you!

Some of the wines are good, particularly the port and the late harvest Sauv.
Unfortunately (as others have commented) the owner kept up a steady stream of highly inappropriate sexual innuendo throughout the tasting.
In New Zealand this type of behavior may be culturally acceptable but it is extremely unprofessional. In a workplace environment what was experienced would be an HR incident at minimum. I write this only to prevent other women from having the same experience.

Served by a crass man who flitted between customers, conversations, and used language and innuendo we did not find appropriate or welcoming. Left before much of a taste as we didn't appreciate the service.

Torlesse was one of a number of wineries we visited through the Waipara region, and definitely the most disappointing of the lot. The wines were just ok, but didn’t standout like some others we tried on this trip. However what did stand out was the rudeness and snobbery of the owner. Aside from a few off comments here and there, he also bagged out entire regions of Australian vineyards as if he was the King of Grapes and they dared compete with him with dirty water. He is the wine snob of wine snobs.

There are plenty of other wineries in Waipara. Go to any of them instead.

We love and respect the opinions of anonymous commentators. NOT really. Perhaps we admire their bravery from a safe distance. NOT really. However we do offer a range of wines that wine enthusiasts can taste and make their own judgements on and we definitely encourage visitors to compare with the other local wineries. We front up and put our name to our wines, it is a pity mystery guest 70 could not manage that.

Four of us were on a road trip to the North Island on April 24th this year. After visiting other wineries in the area decided to visit here.the place was closed but as we were leaving, a very friendly French girl opened up for us,(they were busy harvesting grapes), and allowed us to do tastings. She set up cheese and crackers and we enjoyed several tastings and the information she shared. Two of us are from South Canterbury, we will call in again when passing, the two North Islanders bought twelve bottles here, we bought several as well. Made to feel welcome, we highly recommend Torlesse winery.

Thanks for the nice review, the french girl, Johanne is excellent as a host and also knows her wines, she has now done 3 vintages with us. We are always open but sometimes the cellar door is locked while we work out the back, just walk around the back of the winery and we will always open up. thanks again and you will be made welcome when you return. I have recently visited Torlesse with my husband on a Waipara Winery Tour. I did some research in advance to find out how we should best spend our time. Obviously my very scientific 'research' included checking out TA reviews. I read some very interesting reviews about the wine-maker at Torlesse and was intrigued. In fact...he was probably the main reason to visit...I thought it would be entertaining to banter with this allegedly outrageous character. But alas....he was chained up out the back frothing at the mouth (or he might have been if previous TA reviews are anything to go by) and we got the wife. Wife was lovely and an excellent hostess and I suspect husband would have been too...maybe some people are just a little bit too 'PC' and have absolutely no SOH. Who knows but what a shame not to meet him after all the hilarious/ridiculous reviews (and his witty replies). We enjoyed the spirit and spunk of Torlesse...let husband loose on the general public again...surely he doesn't bite...? The wines weren't our faves of the tour but they were nice enough to happily buy 3 bottles.
