- PbseethuChesterfield, Missouri43 contributionsGem of South Island! The first time we saw Mt Cook at a distance is when we reached Lake Tekapo. It was breathtaking! With Lake Pukaki in the foreground, the views became even better. We did the Kea Point Track (hour-long return from Park Campground Parking) to get up-close views of the tallest peak in New Zealand. The Huddleston Glacier was also visible in the next mountain. It took us 3.5 hours to drive from Christchurch to Twizel, plus another hour (including stops for scenic views) to reach Mt Cook National Park. A visit to South Island without visiting Mt Cook will be incomplete. Highly recommend.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 10, 2024
- Michelle SAuckland Central, New Zealand445 contributionsHeaven on steroidsThis is one place you have to visit. FREE ENTRY. Easy drive to site and large car park at Mount Cook reserve. Walk easily along the boardwalk path with some stairs. There are swing bridges which are very safe for families to use. The track is beautiful and the views breathtaking. When you reach the Mount Cook glacier lake, sit down and take time to have a picnic. Throw the melting ice back into the lakes. Climb up higher and sit on the rocks to get an unobstructed view of Mt Cook itself. Breathe in the fresh air. Heaven just showed up.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten March 5, 2024
- Julia @Scrumptious SolentSouthampton, United Kingdom4,274 contributionsSuch a stunning mountainMount Cook is 3,724m tall and is NZ’s highest mountain. It’s visible from a long way away (and definitely from Lake Tekapo) but the closer you get the better it looks! You get great views of the mountain on the road from Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook village and can also see it by plane or by helicopter. But a fabulous way to see it up close is to walk the Hooker Valley track (three hour out and back walk) which takes you to Hooker lake immediately below the mountain (see separate review page). Just majestic and stunning - not to be missed!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2024

We stayed at the Alpine Lodge in the village which had a great view of Mount Cook from our bedroom window Immaculate shared kitchen with comfy seats. We walked the Hooker Valley Trail which was absolutely stunning. Crossing 3 swingbridges over rushing rivers, past waterfalls and lovely alpine plants and ending up at the frozen lake beneath the glaciers and Mount Cook and even had little icebergs in it.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 30, 2024

We had heard so much about Mt cook. However, the day trip did not seem worth it. For one there was no so much scenic beauty as when going to Milford Sound. Secondly, we expected to be on the mountain with snow . While the mountain is snow covered , you can only see from far. There was not enough time to take the trek. SO basically, after driving for 6 hrs , we reached Mt cook village took a short walk clicked some pics, ate lunch and returned to Queenstown. We were not aware that the same bus actually carries on to Christchurch so that would have been a far better option . Also, I suppose that since I have seen the Himalayan range , this was in no way comparable .

We were so totally blessed with a magical afternoon to Mt Cook. The drive in was spectacularly beautiful with clear skies and vast views. Aoraki had a clear summit against blue skies and it was a truly beautiful sight. We just did the short walks but loved seeing Freda’s Rock (marks the spot where the first woman to summit the mountain had her photo taken), the Alpine memorial (very sobering) and the Mueller Lake lookout. Just a spectacular afternoon which will remain in our memories for a long time. We topped it off with hot chocolates in the bar at the Hermitage. What views!

I’ve literally never seen water as turquoise blue anywhere else. This drive from Queenstown to Mount Cook was amazing the whole way. Mount Cook is breathtaking from a distance and up close.

My Cook is a must see NP especially if u love hiking. When sunny you can’t beat the views of the mountain and glaciers. Absolutely gorgeous. There are hiking trails everywhere for every level and you can hike to many huts from here, they are more difficult. Sir E. Hillary practiced here for Everest and you can see why

Not recommendable. Absolutely mandatory !!!
Take the RD 80 to The Hermitage Hotel and you will enjoy, perhaps the best scenery road you've ever seen. First Lake PUkaki, then Mount Cook and the National Park. NO words to describe it. Stunning

Beautiful area, gorgeous views all around. The Hermitage Hotel has plenty to see and do inside if it is raining. Nice visitor center in the Hermitage, and interesting interpretive area and gift shop inside the National Park Visitor Center down the road from the Hermitage.

We had a great, clear day and beautiful views of the glaciers and Mt. Cook as well as surrounding Mountains. The Visitor Center is a must see, it is configures to capture the views and still give lots of info on climbing and flora/fauna of the area. We took a trail to Kea Point which is pretty easy, uphill but gradual not too rocky, and gave good feel for flow and extent of glaciers. there is a lake and viewpoint and bench at end.

Glacier sea kayaking vs Tasman glacier Heli-hike
We will be visiting Mt Cook around Christmas time. Planning to do one activity there. Either glacier sea kayaking or heli hike! Which one do you all suggest?
Written November 9, 2019
They are both amazing 😉

Hi, I plan to visit there in mid of june and hike the trail with 3 children, which trail suitable for 9 years old child, how about the weather in june and recomend airbnb at nearest location. Tks

We did Hooker Valley trail with our 9yr old. I believe it’s marked as 3.5hrs round trip, but that’s if you walk it non stop. Took us 5hrs (we spent an hour at the trail end playing around the lake & stopped along the way for pictures, lunch & climbing random boulders). It’s not bad, there’s ups & downs, and a bit long. But very beautiful! Especially at the end. It’s a beaten path, but not suitable for strollers. Then we drove the 15-20min over to Tasman Glacier trail head. That one is a quick 20min hike, but it’s straight uphill on stairs the entire time. We stayed at an Airbnb in Twizel bc we booked day before & availability was very low. Didn’t bother us one bit. Made a day of it, then drove to Christchurch next day.
Check out the Visitor Center in village. Really cool. You can start HV trail there, but I wouldn’t (we drove the 5min to trail head & saved ourselves 1hr at least). Uphill from Visitor Center there’s a big building with a museum inside. And a cafe with really good food (pizza was great). We actually got our food to go & ate on the hike.

Hi,
How feasible will it be with twin toddlers(27 months old) in tow. How much walking would we need. We are coming at the end last week of Feb, do we need a sturdy stroller and how about the weather.
Thanks,
Keshav

Keshav,
You would probably do better asking this question on the TripAdvisor South Island New Zealand form. That is where you will find local experts posters from NZ and other NZ enthusiasts who can find and offer up their thoughts to important questions like yours.
Best of luck in your research. Mt. Cook is ridiculously beautiful.

Is it better for us to cancel the trip to Mt.cook(2/11) ,since the weather forecast say it will be a rainy day with winds.
Written February 8, 2018
I will be going in September. Any idea what the weather will be like then. I want to do some hikes.
Written April 16, 2017
September in New Zealand is still consider winter months as the seasons are opposite in the United States. The weather changes at Mt Cook can change very quickly so you need to be prepared for both cold and hot

I will be visiting in mid-February & was hoping to reserve a bunk in Mueller Hut.
Since my visit to NZ is, sadly, a brief one, I won't have the luxury of waiting for a day with clear skies and will have to reserve a specific day upfront.
Therefore I was wondering what the chance is that the weather is in my favour around this time of year? I appreciate that it's an inexact science, but a rough indication would be nice. If it's highly unlikely that the conditions will be fair, I may make alternate plans for this portion of my trip.
Written January 24, 2017
As Robert D has said the chances overall are about 1 in 3 or 4 but the weather, like UK, goes through phases so you can get a much better estimate 5-10 days ahead from NZ's good weather forecasting service. This may enable you to book and cancel if a week or so ahead the weather looks set to be bad.We were there in mid feb 2016 and had a sparkling clear day so good luck...but our day on the glaciers a couple of weeks later was in heavy cloud so no helicopter flights so peaceful and far from being a washout. Good luck

Are the lupins in bloom yet? I'm staying in Wanaka for a couple of weeks and would like to drive to see them, if they're in bloom.

Hi!
A couple of questions regarding the trail:
1. I couldn't find any info whether the trail is free (including the bike rental). If not, what are the costs?
2. As a backpacker, is there a way to transport my backpack so that I don't have to ride with it on my back?
Thanks in advance!
