- JobskModbury, United Kingdom19 contributionsVery informative and witty tour 😁We arranged this tour via Facebook the evening before and David was very quick to respond. He was a great tour guide, funny and very knowledgeable with perfect English. It was fascinating to learn about the history of cork farming, the harvesting and processing and many uses. Would highly recommend and loved the range of products available in the shop afterwardsVisited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 28, 2024
- Dragon789wvThousand Oaks, California2,397 contributionsTotally different experienceMy wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour, coming from Tomar and headed to Evora. It was quite a different experience for us - visiting Corticarte - Arte em Cortica, a cork factory in Azaruja. This was very interesting in how cork is harvested from the bark of a tree and processed into one of Portugal's major exports. First of all, the tree should not have its bark removed until it is at least 25 years old. Thereafter, it is every 9 years, its bark can be harvested again. However, the first 2 times the bark is harvested, the cork is not of good quality. Starting with the third harvest, the cork is very good to great quality, and used to make various products similar to what goods can be made from leather. As an example, a cork used for bottling wine has 8,000,000 cells! A bark tree’s life expectancy is 200-225 years. We bought some souvenirs for our friends back home.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 1, 2024

Our tour guide was very knowlegeable and humorous. We highly recommend this tour and visiting their store..definitely better prices than tourist shops.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 25, 2024

We emailed and messaged on Facebook to reserve a tour, however, they didn't get back to us. We went anyways with the plan of purchasing items and if they had time we would love to hear about the process.
We arrived and were a little confused on where to enter. There is a big door that was open and men were working inside. This is where you enter. The store is located inside the building. The son ( we can't remember his name) was very friendly, and his English was excellent. He was just finishing a tour/helping check out a big tour group when we got there. We waited until he was done and he was happy to give us a tour. It was excellent! He was funny, and it was interesting to hear about cork trees and the process. We highly recommend going!
He mentioned to us that he has a hard time keeping up with reservation requests. I would recommend going and I would bet someone there would explain the process/give a tour.

We are wine people. Given that we spent 3 nights in Evora on this trip, the opportunity to find out how cork bottle stoppers are made was irresistible. We saw the harvested trees throughout the area, but the tour given in English by David (son of the owners/founders) was fantastic. He went over all steps in processing the cork after they purchase it from the farmers--and also described how the renewable harvesting is done. We were impressed at all the different uses for cork, including many products made by this company.
We reserved it in advance by email, corticarte@hotmail.com
The tour is free, but it ends in the gift shop and there were attractive items that we did purchase.

My husband and I were very lucky. We had a personal tour and lesson about cork offered to us by David Caeiro, grandson of the founders of this wonderful cork products operation. We learned how cork is pealed away from the bark by hand. We learned how the cork is bathed and graded and turned into bottle stoppers, bowls, lamps, shoes, bags, jewelry and more. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this important stop just 35 minutes outside of Evora.

Highly recommend! You will have an entirely new sense of wonder about your wine cork plus have a great topic of conversation to go with that bottle of wine. Two of us stopped in Corticarte at the recommendation of our hosts in Evora. Davida was busy with larger tour groups that day and was kind enough take time in between to give us a private educational tour (lasts maybe 30 minutes - all within the same area). Davida's knowledge, humor, and passion of the cork tree and his family business of the cork manufacturing process was catching. We returned home wanting to tell everyone about this experience and our love of the amazing cork tree and product. We also returned home with LOTS of beautiful, functional, eco-friendly, lightweight cork gifts - much better selection and price than in tourist shops. When you visit and meet Davida, please let him know his friends from Hawai'i send their Aloha!

I would not have expected to find the Cork Factory "tour" as worthwhile as it was. The tour guide is also the owner, and was wonderfully fluent in English. He had a great sense of humor, and entertained questions from our large group. It was really interesting to see how the cork is cut off the tree, and he explained it in detail.
There are also items for sale there that were very reasonably priced. I bought a few things and then was sorry I did not buy more there.
The little tour was well worth it and I highly recommend it.

This was a really good find for us. We wanted some cork items to take home and the variety and value was good. Additionally, this is a family operation with production and storage facilities that help you understand how cork is harvested and made into items. You will need cash to shop here, though.

A wonderful tour of an amazing cork factory that was so interesting in so many ways. David Caeiro gave us an amazing view of the cork industry and the value of buying wine with a real cork. Somethings can not be interchanged and real cork is one of them. Come and visit this wonderful factory and be amazed at the products of cork beyond a wine bottle.

Our tour guide arranged a visit to Corticarte - Arte em Cortica, a pruducer of cork. Very educational where they explained the entire process. It is amazing how many things can be made from cork.
They have a small retail store selling only cork products made locally including shoe, hats, clothing, and household items.

David provided a factory tour to my wife and me responding to a "last minute" request we made the day before we arrived. We found the tour fascinating and David to be a most personable and professional tour guide. We learned about the growing and production of cork, purchased a few cool cork baseball hats, and received a nice cork branch walking stick that I needed due to a recent back injury. Overall a worthwhile experience that we highly recommend to all.

This cork factory is outside of Évora. The tour was informative and so interesting. There is also a gift shop with so many different items made from cork - from wallets to shoes! Portugal is the top producer and exporter of cork in the world!

Don't have an email. We just showed up and they accommodated us. Otherwise per quick Google search, contact them thru their webpage using Facebook Messenger. BTW David speaks great English.

We are in the area and would love to take this tour. Did you have to call to make arrangements and did it cost anything? Any info you might share would be appreciated..

We just showed up during regular business hours. We had a rental car. We bought a few small things at the shop. I did not feel any obligation. The fellow who explained things to us was very friendly
