Dinghai Ancient City
Jul 2020
Ancient West and East Street is worth a visit. Some interesting old houses and a busy area with local food and shops.

Old town, some places restored. Old houses (of course not 1000 years old, but 100). Monument of Opium War. The war had started here.

Thousand year old streets
Apr 2013 • Friends
This is a not to be missed area if you visit Zhoushan. The "old town" part of Dinghai has streets that are a thousand years old with some architecture that has maintained. The main street in old town winds along (pedestrian only) and has shops (ship models, local art, jewelry, tea houses and coffee shops, a few restaurants) that are housed in old buildings that used to be residences. One gets a feel for the history of the place meandering through the area. Traditional music often played on Friday or Saturday evenings in one of the small squares.

No restaurants, nice promenade
May 2012 • Friends
We stayed at the Xiangnan Hotel in Dinghai city. Other than the beautiful promenade and lavish-looking restaurant by the water there's not much going on in the town. We first walked over an hour looking for restaurants - only seafood available - we finally found a restaurant at the promenade that serves a buffet but charges you per tea set.

The Xiangnan Hotel was average. We didn't dare take our shoes off in the rooms because the carpets are in an embarrassing state and the breakfast was a warm Chinese buffet.

Also, the town is fairly far (about 40km) away from Putuoshan and Taohuo island.

I would make Dinghai city a drive through destination (for a walk on the promenade) but not an overnight spot.
