The trip from Tarapoto was great fun - river crossing on a ferry (that didn't look too safe!) and travelling along a very muddy dirt road part of the way. Then a boat trip across the lake to some of the attractions including a short horse ride, and lunch (rather late for my liking), before returning.
The "horse ride" was a quick one round a field, which was not quite what I was expecting, and the lunch was at our final stop so rather late in the day (though there were opportunities to eat - at additional cost - at earlier stops). Still, all in all, a very enjoyable, and inexpensive, day out.

Nice lake, take the bus out there, get yourself a little spot to stay, walk around in and out of the town (pretty road surrounded by pretty hills), get yourself some street food or something from the local restaurants, swim around, do the mud bath deal, maybe ride around in one of the tour boats, stuff like that. The local people seemed friendly and peaceful. Great spot to spend a few days!

The good: The people here seemed really friendly. It's a calm little town surrounding a lake where you can go swimming (although I was the only human being who I saw in the lake when I went) , take a Kayak out (lots of hotels seem to have them) , walk through the country side (it's very beautiful and I recommend that you just follow the road out of town to enjoy the rolling hills), enjoy some drinks at night, enjoy the super cheap local food vendors or take a motor boat ride around the lake. It's not a super amazing life changing experience or anything to visit Sauce, just kind of a pleasant little town full of friendly people, feels very safe too. I stayed at a place called Las Hamacas, it was pretty nice with kayaks available to rent and a decent courtyard. If done again I probably would have stayed at Sauce Resort, just because it was kind of noisy and the restaurant was pretty informal at Las Hamacas, although the Venezuelan owners were pleasant there. Also, Las Hamacas didn't take credit cards. Anyway, El Sauce is a pleasant spot to visit if you want a peaceful place where it's nice just to walk around! No aggressive dogs either if you walk around, which is extremely nice.

We went on a tour that took us to Rústica resort at Laguna Azul. It was nice, not a lot to do though. For extra $ you can rent jet ski (s./50 per 10 min) you can hang around in hammocks or rent cabanas. Swim in a small area of the lake, or the small pool. Horseback riding too. It’s pretty, but nothing crazy amazing at Rústica.

I have to tell you that there is nothing wrong with Laguna Azul. It's all about expectations.

First, the name, "Laguna Azul" (Blue Lagoon). Although I assume this refers to the entire lake, eutrophication has degraded the water appearance (and I assume quality) radically. You quickly note the water is tinged green, not blue. A "Secchi disk," developed to measure the transparency of water, would probably be visible for about a foot. In comparison, Lake Tahoe in California, also known as a blue lake, currently has a Secchi disk measurement of 73 feet!

There seemed to be a number of resorts located on the lake. You get into a boat, and head toward one. The one we visited had a very short zipline, kayaks and jet skis for rent, a small swimming area, horses, and a place to buy drinks and souvenirs. I chatted with my son (who lives in Peru) about these opportunities, which seemed so basic and small for a famous destination. He opined that the tourist from Lima, a city in a desert environment, really hasn't had the opportunity to recreate around a large body of fresh water, to ride a horse, and perhaps even to swim. After all, the ocean around Lima is cold!

So for me, this destination was really not very attractive. I spent most of my time sitting at a table, nursing a cerveza and having a great conversation. In fact, the most exciting part of the trip was the ride from Tarapoto when we crossed the river on a ferry, and when some women stopped the combi and asked us all for change... then said we didn't give enough!

Would recommend going to Yurimanguas over this place - there is nothing here. Just a random lake and few resorts. Perfect if you have toooo much time to kill. I'd probably prefer staying at home than wasting time and energy going here

About a 2 hr ride, including crossing the river on a raft, and a 45 min ride on a dirt road, but very well worth it. The lagoon is beautiful and is surrounded by mountains. They take you on a boat ride around the lagoon, with a tour guide and a stop at a recreational area. Our tour included lunch at a local restaurant and resort area.

Hi all, reading about laguna azul we thought it would make for a great day trip. And it did. Take a motor to la parada para sauces (4 soles and just out of town). From there take a car (15 soles one way). We had a really nice driver who made us try local fruits and would stop at miradores for us to take photos. The passing of the river on an improvised pond was definitely the best part of the day. Once in sauces you will have some guys offering to bring you to the other side of the lake. After doubting we did this. Worth it. The boat ride is sweet and serene, number of tourists is 0 (on tuesdays). Bonus: a salto or point of 10 meters high from which you could jump into the river.

An amazing and wonderful experience spending the night right next to this awesome lake. Enchanted music by the night birds and refreshing and cool air during the night.

I love Tarapoto and many of the day trips available. My favorite place in all of Peru. But having done the trip to Laguna Azul seveal times only reinforces my experience that it is a waste of time and very overrated by the local tourist agencies. Very ordinary pond of water with only a few places to eat with unimpressive service and food.
