Lovely trip along the Dordogne river which lasts approximately 50mins. It’s great to be able to see the cliff dwellings and village from slightly further back.

You get a useful commentary throughout the trip which is live in French or via headphones if in English.

Trip costs 11 euros per person and was a nice way to spend a relaxing hour.

A delightful respite from the heat in a shaded seat cruising on the water. The English language audio worked well. It was nice to get some distance and perspective on the town and the chateaus. We took a lot of pictures and decided to stop at Beynac after seeing the town from the boat.

If you've got young children under 5 and want to take them on a boat ride on the Dordogne, this isn't for you. We took a trip today with our 2 grandchildren - a little girl of 3 and a boy of 1 - and as you might expect from children of that age, they don't always sit still and remain quiet as mice for 50 minutes. As well as getting hard stares from some of the other passengers we also got a stiff rebuke from the crew of the boat for not keeping our grandchildren in order and disturbing the peace for the other passengers. Our grandchildren were not exactly running riot but have you ever tried asking a 3 year to whisper for 50 mins?! The crew were happy to take our money (7€ off us for our 3 year old) but what they should have said is this boat ride is only for over 70's or anyone that doesn't like children. This hasn't been our first experience of unfriendliness towards children in France so not sure we'll be heading back anytime soon!

The boats themselves and the views were great. The commentary in English was through headphones which unfortunately did not seem to sync to what you were looking at. For French speakers the commentary is live and more focussed on what is being seen at the time.
This was an activity we did on a rainy day and it was good for this as the boats have roof coverings.

Chose this boat ride because offered in English at 3 PM on a September date. When arrived, changed to French probably because a large French tour joined the trip. The English headphones gave minimal description. Ride was great for taking a nap but poor for learning about the sights.

We wanted to take canoe trip along the Dordogne but due to high flood levels it was impossible so we took a lovely 55 minute trip along the Dordogne on a traditional boat known as a gabarres. Ticket boxes inside the parking bays at La Roque Gageac, very easy to see. Cost €9 each with english commentary. On your trip you have fantastic photo opportunities from the river of the village, just beautiful, and castles along the way.Half way mark is the bridge beneath Castlenaud then return to La Roque Gageac. The commentary was friendly and informative regarding the long use of this riverway. Parking was €2 for 2 hours so plenty of time to grab a drink after your trip. I loved this trip and got some great photos. The boats run half hourly and have retractable covers for rain etc. Highly recommend this attraction. Not wheelchair accessible. (If you find this review helpful please tick the box tks )

Anyone anywhere near La Roque-Gageac must see the town, however briefly. The setting almost is beyond belief. However, by its nature it is narrow and crowded and I have two tips for enjoying the town.
First, either rent a canoe or kayak or take a ride of a gabarre. I doubt if there's too much difference between the two companies but we had a wonderful time on Les Gabarres Caminade. One company or the other departs (at the same price and on very similar replica boats) every half hour. The ride down the river almost to Castelnaud and back takes 50 minutes. The live (and lively) commentary is in French but, if you are not a Francophone, you are given headphones and a little player. You don't need to touch anything. The commentary is GPS'ed into the program, so it starts and stops depending upon where you are on the trip. And it is extremely informative and entertaining about La Roque, river commerce, wars, plagues and the history of nearby places. We learned a great deal in a very enjoyable manner. And nab a front row seat if you can.
The second tip has to do with the town and it will not endear me to the Chamber of Commerce. The main drag of the ancient town probably has some nice shops and galleries. We must have missed them because it was tourist trinkets all the way. But there is a great alternative, at least in one direction or the other. Go one street up from the main street. This is a narrow street that, on the parking lots (east) end of town, begins on the north side of the parking lot that is on the north side of the highway. It's behind the under-construction new T.I. building at the east end of a large patch of bamboo. Alternatively, you can pick up the street about two-thirds of the way through town headed west.
What's enjoyable about this route (in addition to getting away from the crowds and trinkets), is the incredibly lush vegetation. La Roque is a micro-climate and we saw palms, bamboo, passion flowers, agave, and all kinds of other semi-tropical plants growing all along the path. About half-way along is an very old and fairly uninteresting church that is fronted by a courtyard with splendid views.
Hope this helps. We're very glad we spent a couple hours in La Roque-Gageac.

There is much to see in La Roque and much of it involves walking up steep streets. For a less strenous tour I recommend a river tour. The tour takes an hour in an open Dordogne style river boat. The boats are spacious and have canvas covers to keep out rain or bright sun. The open boats also provide great vewing of both the natural landscape, flora & fauna, and the historical man made additions to the landscape. We were fortunate that here were enough English speaking visitors so the company sent two tours out in order with one in French and one in English. Our boat was the Gabarres Caminade and we enjoyed the hour cruise up the river and back. Our guide spoke excellent English and was extrodinarily knowledgeable regarding both natural and historical sites. I highly recommnend the boat tour as an introduction to La Roque and the surrounding area. You can then "deep dive" the sites that you wish to follow up. At only an hour, it is a good overview for the visitor with limited time. And boating is always more fun on someone else's boat:)

We drove into La Roque Gageac at 11:15 planning to canoe down the Dordogne but the next Carsac to Les Milandes (E26 pp) was scheduled for 13:30 so we wandered past the gabarres boat trip leaving in 5 minutes at 11:30 for E9:50 pp. so we took the trip. The weather was perfect and the trip very enjoyable. The only complaint is that the live French commentary was more informative (but we don't understand enough French) than the English which was taped and keyed to GPS location. Still we really enjoyed it and decided not to canoe the river which would have been without any commentary.
