We chose a lovely winter day to visit the gardens. The distance to walk and explore was just enough for our 2 and 3 year olds. Lots of places to picnic. The playground kept all the kids busy while we enjoyed a coffee. Looking forward to coming in summer when the gardens are in gloom and leaves on the trees.... More

We were welcomed on our walk around this garden by a large number of ducks and chickens. The gardens look nice and are looked after and have a viewing platform for the kids to climb up. We saw lots of colourful peacocks, pheasants and parrots on our walk around and the kids enjoyed feeding the birds even though the hungry... More

I enjoyed the katikati bird gardens overall but was upset by the caged birds. Very basic cages, appeared neglected with not much inside them to keep the birds interested or happy. Also they were generally overgrown with outside foliage and would not get a lot of sun. There was a wood pigeon looking very forlorn in a cage - unless... More

I came here for my anniversary. Stayed at their cottage and got to explore the gardens alot. The cottage was warm and beautiful and came with lovely breakfast. The gardens were wonderfully tended for and you could always find a beautiful spot. All the birds were very friendly and wanted to be fed and followed, which made the experience much... More

I enjoyed wandering the grounds - pretty gardens and the picturesque wetlands area. A tranquil experience and some good photo opportunities. Quite a variety of free-range birds - plenty of very tame chooks, ducks, peafowl & doves and some surprising exotics (silver and lady amherst's pheasants, cape barren geese) - but also numerous wild native birds including kingfisher, silver-eyes, tui,... The Bird Gardens needs an upgrade and the bird enclosures are very small. For the size of the land there is plenty of room to expand.

I took my 6 year old daughter and my parents to the bird gardens on a rainy Easter Friday - it was a great time. My daughter was in "bird paradise" and was thrilled to feed the birds out of her had. She also got to pick up a baby chick which was probably just a few days old. Watch... More

We took a day trip while staying in Rotorua to Katikati to visit the bird gardens as my special needs 12 year old loves to feed chickens and ducks. She was not disappointed and we had to drag her away after 4 hours! The highlight was a big family of teenage Muscovy ducks who were our constant companions. She also... More

On a very dreary day we spent a very enjoyable couple of hours wandering through the gardens and seeing and photographing a variety of wild birds. The gardens have a magnificient variety of plants and trees and a number of aviaries containing some more exotic birds. Not a fan of birds in cages but throughly enjoyed those roaming free and...
