This is one of my favourite beaches.
The views above and beach and on the beach are great and when the sun sets it is something else.
Atmosphere is really nice and beach is really clean and tidy. No litter which is good.
Would definitely recommend as I think it’s one of the best beaches in the north east.

Excellent beach
This is an excellent expanse of golden sand to the north of the river Tyne bordering Tynemouth. The beach is large and popular serving locals and day trippers (the metro system stops at Tynemouth). If you are driving, observe the permit and payment system to protect spaces for local residents. Or get a ticket!!
On Monday I had an alternative start to the week, with a beach walk with my team to clear our heads before looking at our purpose and vision. It was a great start to the week.

Even upon the hottest, busiest day the crowds can disperse upon this vast expanse of golden sand. It is safe, clean and family-friendly with plenty of parking close by. If you fancy a short walk whilst here, other smaller bays are nearby as is the castle, pier and Tyne riverside promenade.

We love taking our dog to Tynemouth most weekends.
When the tide is out, the beach is huge. ( Check tide times before walk).
There are usually lots of people with their friendly and sociable dogs on this beach at weekends.
The beach is very clean. There are always lots of surfers in the sea.
A restaurant at either end too.

What a beautiful beach of soft golden sand. There's beach wardens making sure the beach is tidy and safe. There are several life guards watching the brave swimmers and surfers. There are safe flags marked out at the shoreline. There's a surf board hire shop and a lovely beachfront cafe called Crusoes.

Long Sands beach is a wonderful stretch of sand to stroll or spend the day. I have been coming here for years and it never fails to impress, more so on a hot day. Great place for family days out, picnics or relaxing.

Large well maintained stretch of clean sand. Very popular so it can get busy in peak periods.
A good place to visit if you are on a city break in nearby Newcastle and fancy a change of scenery.

Tynemouth has so much to offer I’m surprised it isn’t more widely known. Stunning beaches like this really are the jewel in Gosforths coast. Also the adjoining beach is beautiful and clean.

This is a lovely clean, sandy beach in a sheltered cove overlooked by the castle & priory. There are lots of steps however! It was very busy on the hot Sunday when we visited. Snack bar and ice-creams available nearby!

Half of the beach at Whitley Bay is dog friendly.
You can use the beach from St Mary's Lighthouse end all the way down to Rendezvous cafe.
There is free parking available at the big Briardene car park ( opposite the pub).
We love Tynemouth Long sands too! Half of the beach is dog friendly. Walk from The View (restaurant) end and there is a small flag to mark where the dog friendly zone ends.

What are the current rules about bbqs on the beach?
Dr_Waugh
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK6,209 contributions
The council discourage this but it is accepted that visitors will bring disposable BBQs. They ask that you use them appropriately. Don’t site them on grasses. Be safe and wait until they have cooled completely before binning them. Or pour water on to put them out before disposing into waste bins.
There’s an article on the Evening Chronicle website about this that is easily found.
I prefer to get food from Riley’s or Longsands fish kitchen or take a picnic. It can be breezy and sand burgers are no fun.
Hope that helps!

Can i get to the beach with someone with poor walking ability?

You can park quite near beach in front of grand hotel and sit at cafe on the beach . There is another gentle slope access point further round , and if you go to the rendezvous car park you get access to the promenade , not too far and on the flat . Some beach access from there , I have certainly got a wheelchair onto sand from there . After that .....
good luck it is so beautiful ..

Are dogs allowed on the beach
Richard C
Whitley Bay, UK79 contributions
Yes - until May 1st they are allowed on the entire beach. From May 1st the beach is split between sections where dogs are not permitted - there are sign posts.
Is nudity allowed?

Hi
Yes it is dog friendly all year around but summer restrictions are in place between May and September.
If you park by St Georges church you can use that end of the beach up to the part of the beach level with the Park Hotel.
Hope that helps.
We call it the Cullercoats end of Longsands.

Are the beaches dog friendly
GEORDIEPOSH
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK30 contributions
All the beaches are dog friendly til may1st. Depending on what type of dog you have I would suggest king Edwards bay beach for a little dog my pug puppy loves it there. All other sizes go to the Longsands beach. There all beautiful with blue flags. Enjoy your day out.
