Very nice walk to do, with friends or family. To make the round trip, it is better to have a good physical condition. We went from Areinho to Espiunca with two children. And return in 4x4 for the modest sum of 20€ (still).
Starting from Areinho, at first, it goes up a lot, but with breaks, it goes very well. Past the Arouca suspension bridge, it is much easier, almost than descending with beautiful landscapes. It took us about 3 hours taking a lot of breaks to drink.
If you want to make the Arouca suspension bridge in addition (a round trip on it), you must book a few days before. For us, it was already sold out so we couldn't do it. It seemed accessible to everyone. On the bridge there were families with young children.
Don't forget your sneakers, a little snack and water, lots of water!
Have a nice ride.

We parked in the Areinho park, it is still quite large and there is also a cafe with snacks and quick food, and we started our trail along the walkways. Since we do mountaineering we didn't have any difficulties. At first it goes up a little but we didn't find it difficult at all, after the climb at km 1 you will find the famous bridge on your right, but as we had already crossed the bridge in the morning we continued forward. The rest of the route is not difficult at all, it is almost always downhill. In total it is 8km. When you reach the end, Espiunca immediately provides transport for the return to Areinho, you have the option of taxi or jeep. We chose the jeep, it's more about adventure, we paid 12 euros. There is also a small tavern with cold drinks on site. We needed 3 hours for the route with lots of stops for photos. The ideal would be to do a round trip (16km), but as it was late it wasn't possible, I'll have to go back. The ticket I bought to visit the bridge (12 euros) is also valid for the walkways. Attention, only buy online! After reading the comments, the logistics for visiting the walkways seemed a little complicated, but it turns out it isn't. The gentleman at the hotel where we were staying also gave us good directions (Hotel Rural Quinta de Novais)

Tried to go here today, website wasn't taking payment so thought we would pay on arrival. Parked in top carpark as advise d as in motorhome. Walked the mile or more down steep dusty track, then another half mile to the start of wooden walkways only to be told next availability is at 6.30pm ! And you can only pay via website ? (See below from their website)
" On the entrance only payment with bank card is available'
So be warned, book a time slot and pay (if website is taking payments) before you go.
We wasted a today and the staff member not helpful at all.

A great trip by tour company Detours and our guide for the day, Dioga, who was very personable, knowledgeable and caring. We experienced the bridge first, which meant we didn’t climb the 300 steps to the walkway but joined it for the downward 7.8 km. The views were breathtaking and we passed waterfalls and many species of trees which Dioga named for us. A very enjoyable hike followed by a fantastic dinner before being driven back to our hotels. Definitely recommended.

Perfect for a day trip with the family, as a couple or alone. Beautiful surroundings and beautiful views. Taken about 4 hours from we left the car and came back. It was only one road that is 8km with a half hour lunch and breaks occasionally. Booked ticket online from home for 2 euros per person and paid a taxi 16 Euro to get the 12km return again. Bathed in the beautiful water by the river after finishing at the parking lot. All in all, this trip can be highly recommended. You only need to be regularly trained/in good condition to perform.

Park in Espiunca and definitely go to the toilet. Then by jeep to Alvarenga and from there over the bridge. There are no toilets there anymore. You then walk along the Paiva walkways and halfway through his toilets. There was also a small tent where you could normally get something to eat and drink but here was a sign that this is only open on weekends. At the end in Espiunca you can eat and drink something simple on the terrace but at the parking lot is also a restaurant with great food, not expensive and good service. The route can also be reversed but then you have to climb a lot.

With a very attractive look, the walk through Passadiços do Paiva deserved better hospitality for walkers.
There is no proactive guidance for anyone entering the park. The people at the door just want to charge access tickets and nothing else.

There is no comment, guidance, considerations about care, difficulties, facilities. There is no place on the path where a hiker can sit down for a moment to rest.

Signage is practically non-existent, even at times when there are forks.

On the other hand, there is also a need for maintenance on the walkways, with several broken or lifted parts, which creates a risk of accidents.

Upon arriving at the other side, we are faced with the opposite of this in the Restaurant, lovingly run by a family, with all the comfort that is missing on the route.

It's not an easy walk, especially at the beginning, as even if you start in Areinho (to go downwards), at the beginning you have a lot of steps up and only then the path starts to decend. But it's still better to start from Areinho, as after the first demanding part of the walk, then it's pretty smooth and plain. The walk is about 8 km long. If by any chance you cannot make it any further, after about 4 km, some driver can come and pick you up.

We did the walkways in both directions, so we followed the indication to start at Espiunca - Areinho- Espiunca.

If you want to do it both ways, be prepared, because with the stairs, the level of difficulty of the route increases and if you do it both ways, you will reach the end tired, for those who are not physically prepared, or frequently perform physical activity.

The views of the river and banks are beautiful! Excellent to do with the family.

As for 516 Arouca – Suspension Bridge, I found it too expensive to "just" cross from one side to the other...

We walked from Areinho side which is closest to the newly built bridge, but only to find out when reaching the top that it had not yet been inaugurated as advertised due to Covid ☹️. From that side, it is all up and down, several hundred stairs. I could still feel it in my legs 3 days after...
Most people actually walk from Espiunca where you can get 6 km fairly flat.
We walked after lunch, mostly in the shade.
