Dogs are NOT allowed on the trails or on the beach at the beginning, so we couldn’t do the walk. We ended up taking them further down the river and swimming which was nice (you don’t need tickets for this).

Dogs are allowed in the park as a whole, but not on the paid trails.

In our experience in Passadiços do Paiva, we begun the route for Espiunca and we didn't finish the route until Areinho (8,7 km is the complete route). We went until the River beach of Vau and crossed the bridge to the other river bank and we prefered go back to Espiunca, where we parked the car. Next time, we intend to go back to walk the complete route.

If you have more than a couple of days in the area, make sure this is on your list of things to do! Tour company Detours provides several options to access this walk, from bringing your own picnic to a full lunch in a restaurant. You set your own pace, stop where you want, and other than the steps at the beginning (or end, depending on your direction), it is an easy walk. A snack bar is available at the mid-point and end. This makes a great day away from the bustle of the towns and cities.

Very nice day trip from Porto, much recommended, no need for a guided tour,
easy to get there by a car, you will have to leave your car at one entrance and take one of the available taxi's
back.

We crossed the suspension bridge (from Alvarenga) then walked the walkways to the end where we were able to get a cab back to our car.

The walkways are free and great scenery. If you want to use the suspension bridge, you have to pay. Take water and comfy shoes!

Our guide Joao was the most enthusiastic guide sharing from his hometown experience about the villages, the canyon, geology, flora etc I wasn’t sure about a Boardwalk hike but it was great for being able to watch the river instead of my feet!
