Lovely
Feb 2020
The church was closed when we visited in February but it was nice in photos. The village itself is really pretty and I would recommend a visit.
We walked there from Cabanas along the cycle path.

Unchanged in 5 years.....

How nice to see somewhere as quite and peaceful as it was when we last visited in 2015. Mind you, that was February, and it was the same month today five years later, but nonetheless the church looked as beautiful and inspiring as it did then. The square, small village and ambience has lost none of its charm. The coach parties stop for 20 minutes then disappear. A delight when it’s as quiet as today.

Church in the Center of historic Cacela velha
Jul 2017 • Couples
The church is beautifully located overviewing the beach area (accessible if you decide to walk 116 stairs down and - maybe a bit more challenging - back up again.
The church can only be visited on Sundays or prior to funeral services. It's architecture is witness for the century-long occupation of this area by the Arabs, so the bell tower shows the typical elements of arab architecture. "Algarve" by the way stems from the arabic words "al gharb" - "the West".

Charming village
May 2017 • Couples
Smell the real old portuguese way of life in this small town. Only a few houses, a beautiful church, an old fortress and lots, lots of beautiful sights.
Visit the cemetary and the beach too!

Closed again, but lovely little poet town with exceptional views

We had been before but decided to go back on our way through. Lovely tiny village with views over the enclosed area containing the small fishermen boats. It's part of the natural park and a lot of wildlife (birds) come to nest in this area. The view from atop is beautiful.
There are a couple of small cafe's open if you fancy a drink in March but nothing else is open yet. The fort also closed.

Charming tiny village and church, great view
May 2016 • Couples
This is a charming tiny village, with church and a fortress, located on the top of a hill overlooking the estuary of the Ria Formosa. I never visited the inside of the church or the fortress, because I prefer to admire the view from the hill, which is breath-taking. The village itself is beautiful, with its charming small, white houses.

I visited twice, once in September and once in May, but I was told that during the summer months the place is very crowded and I guess some of the charm might be missing.

Bit disapointed that the church was closed but the actual village was very nice. It had some houses that commemorated poets, maybe they once lived or wrote their poems there or something. We were just passing by and wanted to walk on the beach but there was no beach. The views from the church were excellent and could see the beach further own at Manta Rota but the small fishing boats just left in the low tide and crstal clear water on a natural reserve was breath-taking. Got some great pix and walked back to the parking lot and left. It was all closed in Feb even the fort and only one small bar open. I recommend the village when it is open.

Charming little place
Jul 2015 • Friends
It is in Cacela Vehla, a few kilomteters from Vila Nova de Cacela. A small fortress with a church, cemetry, great views and one restaurant that is open year round. Many cats. A lot of charme.
