Nicely restored historic borgo on two hills. The part Castello Vecchio contains the former monastery of San Francesco in which there is a museum now: nice frescoes in the church and some beautifum paintings in the pinacoteca. Birth place of Braccio Fortebrace. The other hill has the convento di Sant'Agnese: the nuns of the order of Saint-Claire guard the relic of the Santa Spina, a thorn from Jesus'crown. Nice central square: Piazza Fortebrace with a nicely decorated bar. Various nice restaurants. Beautiful old fortified town walls.

We stumbled across this town and have been staying here over the summer. It is just perfect, small enough that you feel like you are on a movie set with roads and lanes closed to traffic. You can walk in on the level to the main Piazza and enjoy a cold drink or Gelato from Cafe Aires or an amazing meal at L'Antica Osteria or 4 other great restaurants throughout the town. If you are travelling in Umbria you won't find souvenirs and trinkets, you will find a friendly village living as it has been for centuries! With great food and some nice clothing stores!

This beautiful medieval town is walled and nestled high in the mountains. It's such a jewel, I don't want to tell anyone else about it. Although it's a thousand years old, you feel like you're stepping at least a hundred years back, on this laid back piazza. Not a touristy spot, no souvenirs or trendy night spots, just relaxation and enjoyment. This place has such a feeling of community and family! When I was there the piazza was filled with lawn chairs and EVERYONE came out for the spring music students' recital. The school has no athletics, and many of the young people take music lessons from two teachers who come up from the valley. It was so heartwarming to see the love and support of the community and between the students themselves.
The Aries Bar is the heart of the city, and it's open about 20 hours a day. Michele, Elysa, and Monia keep the place running smoothly, and know all the characters of the city, and soon, all the visitors. The bakery at the foot of the hill is good for handmade pizza, pastries and wine, all for about 1 euro each. There are 5 or 6 top quality ristorantes in town, each specializing in their own fare. We ate at all of them. I love Montone, and hope it never changes.
We were there with a group of American students, and we were treated so warmly.

We returned to Montone after nine years with very fond memories of our wonderful stay. Spending a week in the village again this time, we were not disappointed - if anything it has improved.
The whole village of universally stone ancient buildings has been beautifully preserved and there are many signs that this a proud and closeknit community. Almost without exception, every building is in superb condition and colourful flower boxes, narrow lanes, the absence of traffic within the ancient walls and incredibly cleanliness everwhere make Montone a gem.
The centre of the village is Piazza Fortabraccio, which is busy day and night with locals enjoying each others' company, a beer, grappa, coffee or just a chat outside the popular Cafe Aries. In the evening the piazza is crowded with happy and friendly villagers simply having a good time.
There are a number of excellent restaurants in the village, which is also in easy reach of other towns such as Citta di Castello, Pietralunga, Perugia, Umbertide, Assisi, Spello and Gubbio, all of which also have good facilities, restaurants and historic sights to enjoy. In the town itself, there are also an excellent bakery, general and fruit and vegetable store, macelaria and butcher for convenient purchases.
Montone is perched on a hill and the views of the surrounding countryside are quite superb: a patchwork of lush green woodlands, golden ripening wheat, newly planted green lucerne, corn and sunflowers and neat rows of vegetables with mountain peaks in the distance.
This wonderful town unquestionably deserves its title as one of the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy. A day trip is certainly recommended, but to really enjoy this unique place and its delightful, friendly people, stay for a week at least.

Worth a quick stop or as a base for exploring larger cities in Umbria. Very quiet and clean. Lovely streets and quite a few osteria and restaurants.

Montone has winding streets and stairways, it is all pedestrianised within the boundary walls. You can walk all the way round in about 30 minutes. Its easy to envisage what it would have been like in medieval times. From each hilltop and in each direction there is a wonderful view. There are plenty of restaurants and a very friendly bar in the central piazza. The village often holds free concerts or pageants and activities . There is the village museum and the church of San Francesco with frescos. Relax and spend a couple of hours here absorbing Italian village life as it unfolds around you.

Pleasant stroll around this delightful hilltop village. Central Piazza was clearly the focus of early evening activity, with a pleasant bar and number of restaurants featured elsewhere on here. Warm welcome from Stella the Piazza cat as we sat down and tok in the atmosphere. Worth a visit.

This historic town is well worth a visit. There are some interesting shops and good restaurants, and the town was very peaceful at lunchtime on a Wednesday. There are special events 11-18 August 2019 which should be fun and interesting.
We were pleased to find disabled parking 0n Via Aldo Bologni, right next to the archway leading to the main square. Do go to the Tourist Office (on left just inside the archway) to get a map. This is a good map for people with a disability because you can see easily which streets have steps and stairs. However there is a steep climb up to the top of the town at the old castle (Rocca di Braccio) so if you want to go there, go by road as it is difficult using a powered chair on steep cobbled streets.
Unfortunately we could not get to our chief target by wheelchair, the Church and Museum of San Francesco.

Hi David,
I'm afraid I can't find any information regarding Casa Sora Chiara in Montone. I looked at various hotels and B&B's but couldn't find it. There certainly are a number of listings here on Trip Advisor. Perhaps the owner no longer operates the business. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheers!

We are tempted to visit Montone, but we are concerned since we will be bringing our 20-month old daughter and her pushchair, as she wont be able to walk much. is the climb to the village only possible by steps or can we drive up and park our car and then walk around with a pushchair? thanks!

If you have good nerves and a small car you can drive down the narrow street called Roma right into the Center plaza. Parking is outside the wall and the center is definitely worth a visit!
