A surprisingly tacky town
Oct 2020
After 3 weeks of great touring in Crete we stopped into Matala for a look-see. We were surprised to see that the entire commercial part of town was unusually tacky and touristy, unlike anything we had experienced so far.

A really cool beach with a very unique scenery. There are many small caves in the mountain to which you can climb and enter. Nice tabernas and a very nice village!

Picturesque but very busy
Aug 2020 • Couples
Wednesday 26th August and we visited the village of Matala which is located 75 km south-west of Heraklion.

Although the main reason to come to Matala was to see the caves, situated on the north side the beach, which we also visited.

The  300 metre stretch of beach with it's coarse sand and pebbles is situated within a picturesque bay. It surrounded by cliffs at both ends linked by mountains behind with crystal clear waters. Some brave visitors dive from the cliffs into the sea below.

The are a number bars, restaurants and shops around.

On the beach there are a lot of sunbeds and umbrellas some to hire, others for the restaurants guests. This area was a bit heavily populated. There was plenty of space, along the beach to spread out the beach mats and towels. There is an area covered by trees, where there is shade is available to spread out under

There is a lifeguard on duty on the beach. Other facilities include  toilets, showers and first aid.

There were a number of activities available on the beach including beach volley, water sports and boat excursions

Nearby the beach there are a myriad of shops here, some with more than a hint of the hippy culture. Along with coffee shops, restaurants, jewellery, souvenir and many more to explore.

Parking here is a bit of a nightmare, we parked in a disused camp site, €2 for the day, just a couple of minutes walk from the beach.

The best we saw in creta
Aug 2020
The best we ever seen in our travel in creta. History about the people lived on the caves make you a feeling that you are in another century.

Who wouldn't want to come to this famous beach. The sea is crystal clear and deep. Over looking the 'hippy' caves, the sunsets are amazing

Safe Swimming
Oct 2019
The beach has no waves so is very safe for swimming. A pleasant place to walk and stop at a cocktail bar or two!
