The canal system in England is great but this was my first experience of French canals. This set of four locks lowers the water level 9.6 meters from the Castelnaudary Basin to the Canal du Midi going East. We timed out late Autumn visit with a cruiser navigating the locks so got to see the locks in action. Well worth a visit.

The 4 lock staircase at Castelnaudary is really a great piece of engineering. At weekends especially tourists and locals come to see it on operation with large number of boats going up and down. The site however is a bit of a let down and much could be done to improve the beauty and amenity of the setting and so make a much greater tourist attraction. Take a look at the staircase flight at Fonserannes near Beziers for example.

This was our very first lock on leaving the basin on our boat trip on Canal due Midi - if we can do it, anyone can! The Lock keeper was very patient and helped us a lot, while laughing his ass off! Stunning series of Locks and pretty deep!

If you're coming upstream by boat you have to pass this staircase of locks. No problem. The lock keeper is quite helpful and less than an hour should get you up to the main basin, where there are plentiful moorings and a nice town to explore.

There's nearly a hundred locks on the Canal de Midi between the Mediterranean Sea and Toulouse. You can see four of them in Castelnaudary. Worth a detour to see these ancient locks still in operation some 350 years after the Canal was built.
