Sekihoku-go bus
Mar 2018
I couldn’t find much information on the Sekihoku-go bus (石北号バス) when I was researching how to travel between Abashiri and Sounkyo. However, in the end the process went smoothly. I took a train from Abashiri to JR Kitami station, then caught the 14:15pm Sekihoku-go bus from Kitami to arrive in Sounkyo at 16:15pm. The bus has to be reserved in advance, which I did 1 month before my travel date. Reservation was made by emailing the Kitami bus company, and I received a reply within a couple of days. I was grateful and relieved that our email correspondence was in English! (I did add some Japanese via google translate). On the day of travel itself, I went to Kitami bus terminal at 13:30pm to pay (¥2570 per person) and pick up our bus tickets – just had to tell them my name and that I had a reservation. The Kitami bus terminal is to the left as you take the North exit from JR Kitami station, just a few minutes’ walk, and is easily located on google maps. It’s right next to Parabo shopping mall. Sekihoku-go bus leaves from platform 1. There was plenty of space for our suitcases in the luggage compartment. The journey was smooth and comfortable with free wifi onboard, even though Sounkyo itself was caught in a raging snow blizzard that day. Do note that the Sounkyo ‘bus stop’ is at Sounkyo post office, and the Sekihoku-go bus does not bring you directly to your hotel. Fortunately, we could take refuge from the blizzard in Sounkyo Information Centre 層雲峡観光案内所 (which is in the same building as the post office, and is different from Sounkyo Visitor Centre), while waiting for the shuttle pick up from Hotel Taisetsu.
