Giving an excellent view of the Bay Of plenty from a well placed lookout! there is actually a number of sites in this area, with the first placed to give the best views to the East (Best place ever for a cool sunrise!!), a second will give a better view facing West over looks the town of Whakatane and the View towards Tauranga in the distance. Whale Island view is awesome! Best spot to watch a sunset. It is also a great picnic area

It's only a couple of Km up and the same back but worth doing. It is a continual climb/walk to get there but track is clearly defined - be aware if you get vertigo it may catch you out in a couple of places as it did my wife.
Views from the top are stunning - go early in morning as it gets hot later.

We spent ten minutes enjoying this glorious lookout. There is a large survey trig station at the top and a good parking area with a rubbish bin if needed. The day we visited there was no wind but it would be windy from all directions. Great views in all directions.
There is a short dirt road access from the sealed portion. So be prepared for dust on the vehicle. If this is helpful please tick the helpful tag below.

Sadly they have ruined it!

Have happily done this walk for several decades and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately the stupid powers that be have totally ruined it by 'improving' (yeah right) the track with many many blimmin' horrible steps. Just ridiculous, and now totally spoilt what used to be a wonderful enjoyable track with wonderful views.

Unbelievable....

Turn left off the road from Whakatane to Ohope just before it descends into Ohope and follow the signs . Take care on the section of gravel road that can be a bit corrugated at times but fine if taken slowly. The view at the end is with it, stretching from Mount Edgecumbe to White Island puffing on the horizon. Walk down the grassy area to the Pa (Maori Fortification) site for a view over the Whakatane River Mouth. On the way back to the main road enjoy the view East to the end of the Bay of Plenty

Well worth the drive off the main road and up a winding hill to the lookout which also has some lovely Maori carvings which were created by local carvers. Once there the views over the town and out to sea where both Whale and White Islands can be seen is wonderful.

The lookout area gives a great view over Whakatane, Ohope Beach and Whale Island. It can be accessed on foot from Whakatane via Seaview Road where you follow a sign for the “Nga Tapu Waeo Walkway” or from Ohope Beach on the Kohi Point Track. Much as these trails are apparently very scenic, to save time we followed the advice of our guesthouse hosts and drove up via Ohope Road, Otarawaiere Road and then Kohi Point Lookout Road from Ohope Beach. Although it’s single track and unsurfaced for the final stretch the road wasn’t too testing. There’s a parking area and turning circle at the top.

Here it’s a short walk to Kapu Te Rangi or Toi’s Pa, the site of an ancient Maori settlement and a plaque gives some background information. The ceremonial pole near here was erected in 2005 to commemorate the return of the land from the Government.

The much larger Nga Tapu Waeo Walkway is a loop trail of the area and would take all day to complete, although the Kohi Point Track (which forms part of it and links Whakatane and Ohope Beach) apparently takes over 3 hours to walk. It gives the only landward access to Otarawairere Bay at low tide, which is supposed to be worthwhile visiting. Time limitations in our schedule didn’t allow for the trails or beach but the shortcut by car to the lookout was worthwhile.

You get stunning views over Whakatane and out to Whale Island, but on the clear day we were there, we could only just make out White Island. We drove up and the last bit is narrow and shingle but easy parking and a loop to turn at the top.

We were staying in Ohope Beach and went over the hill to Whakatane. On the way we noticed a signpost to the lookout. The final kilometer or so is gravel road but not too onerous on the tyres. At the top, have a walk round to get views over Whakatane town and estuary, then swing round to see Whale Island. On the approach road there is a view point to look down on Ohope beach all the way to Ohope and the entrance to the harbour.

Gorgeous views, and the perfect spot for a picnic with the family. Watch out for the fences next to it as sometime they are on and kids can get a shock if they touch them
