Be careful, be very careful.
If you love smoked food, as I do, only shop here with a good trusted friend to drag you out when you try buying up the shop.

I have certain favourites in the smoked seafood category and all were there. Smoked to perfection.
The lady there allowed me to select a couple of these, four of those, one of those, half a dozen of them, etc. Then my wife dragged me away, after I paid.

All tasted excellent as I ate them down by the river.
A bit expensive but I really enjoyed all of it.

I am a Kiwi living in Australia. Aside from salmon, most Australians view smoked seafood with deep suspicion - hence smoked white fish is almost impossible to find here, and it’s criminally expensive if you do happen to score some. When I visit home I’d crawl over hot coals to reach the Coromandel Smoking Company.

If you’re from elsewhere you should know that in NZ has a huge length of coastline in proportion to its relatively small size and some of the cleanest waters in the world. Here, hot-smoked seafood is not just a novelty or something that only ‘foodies’ seek out, it’s more of an everyday item, so they’re really good at it. You can buy smoked white fish in most supermarkets but if you want the good stuff you should head for a specialist, and you can’t get much better than the Coromandel Smoking Co.

If you’re a stranger to smoked fish, ask the staff to assist you in making a choice because some fish are stronger in flavour and/or firmer than others and what’s available depends on the season. I always gorge on smoked roe, smoked snapper, and smoked scallops and then I stock up on smoked mussels (BBQ are my favourite) and mackerel to take home. Some of their their products are available at various retail outlets across the country but nothing beats buying it fresh from the source. I’m not sure about other places, but Australian Customs are perfectly happy to allow CSC vac-sealed products into the country.

Once you have your lovely piece of fish you can eat your purchase ‘as is’, stuff it into a fresh white roll with plenty of butter and pepper, serve it as a main course for dinner, use it in antipasto, turn it into a spread or a pie…the list is endless.

If you’re about to visit Coromandel for the first time all I can say is you lucky thing - make sure you put the Smokehouse on your to-do list!

The variety of the smoked goods are just wonderful. We purchased an array of fish and had a picnic!

Also check out the Oyster place!

We were 4 adults looking for local delicacies for our week’s holiday.
The cooler with pate & other items only had a tiny pate & the rest was empty.
We bought mussels already in a pottle & also pre bagged. Neither listed ingredients or had expiry dates. We found this difficult because of food allergies.
We also bought a piece of smoked trevally, which was dry, inedible & really disgusting.
A business like this should be an asset for a town but this place really needs to look at laws of selling food & check for freshness.
We couldn’t return the fish as we were way out of town.

Sometimes a bit grumpy but their salmon is delicious, other fish are good but a bit dry. We liked the habanero flavor on the oysters.

What a find - we arrived in the last half hour of the day and were so glad we made it before the shop shut. Being able to have samples really made a difference to the amount we purchased! The problem was we couldn't decide what to buy and bought loads it was so tasty.

We visited NZ in 2008 and discovered this place then, even getting our Christmas eve dinner there! We just returned in November, and made a trip up the Coromandel to visit it again. Once again we chose the large sampler tray at $45 NZ, which lasted us for a week of tasty dinner, lunches or snacks! Whitefish, salmon, mussels, and some of the fresh local fish, all superbly smoked and boneless. Buy some good bread and crackers, pick up some of the smoked olives or cheeses they also have, some NZ wine and you'll be in smoky heaven! It's very basic and old fashioned inside, but it's a wonderful place to visit!

Amazing array of smoked delicacies from the sea...
The salmon is out of this world, the mussels plump and in an exciting selection of flavours...
Well worth the visit when in Coromandel town and make a point of taking a parcel of goodies home to savour with a cool Sauvignon Blanc...!
