Antpitta Heaven!
Nov 2019
After some difficulty, over a period of months, in finalising a booking at Rio Blanco, our visit was finally confirmed. Once we had been there, we realised that the main visitors to this wonderful reserve are professionally organised bird tours. As it turned out, the two of us spent 3 nights at the reserve in very comfortable room, and we had the place to ourselves overnight. Each morning tour parties would arrive, to join the ranger on a walk up the mountain, to seek out different species of Antpitta. These walks are hugely enjoyable, not just to find antpittas, but many other bird species, starting with an enormous variety of hummers in the gardens of the lodge.

We really enjoyed the experience of having the lodge to ourselves overnight, and were served wonderful local meals by the cook. We had a Spanish speaking bird guide to help us, his name is Andres. Amazingly, although he has only rudimentary English, he has memorised all the English and scientific names of the local birds. We had a great time with him.

Hummingbirds and antpittas galore
Nov 2019
We have birder for 40 years all over the world and would be hard-pressed to find a place that compares to Rio Blanco. The feeders had so many hummingbirds we could barely identify them all as they buzzed around us. The antpitta stations were amazing as we sat and waited for the birds to come by and get their worms. Seeing the sword billed hummingbird in the forest was a birder's dream come true. We also had a delicious breakfast and lunch arranged by our guide Daniel Lopez. The only thing to remember is the altitude is about 7500 feet so you might feel a bit short of breath when you go uphill. Bring a jacket as it is cool in the morning.

Great place but for ornithologists
Nov 2019 • Couples
As it was difficult for us to get the right informations, I try to put everything here:

We spent 24h in Rio Blanco. We took the cheapest (Price still above the average) room and it was simple but ok. The garden full or colibris was wonderfull. We had an excellent and very competent guide (Andres++) for a night and a morning tour. We didnt see anything during the night tour but saw a lot in the morning (more than 45 bird species) and we even saw a coati! It was great but it is clear that you really need to be into birds otherwise it could be boring.

For the reservation, you need to contact by phone/whatsapp a woman from the water compagne of Manizales which run the site: +57 312 2261116. You really need to contact them ahead (at the very least 2 days before) as they want you to pay for the room before to go (they asked us to do a money transfer but as we couldnt do it in time, we went directly to Aguas de Manizales, close to Cable Plazza and paid in cash).

You will find general informations about the reserve on Aguas de Manizales website (go to the Ambiental section).

There is a person who can cook for you there (there is no shop and no kitchen for the tourists): we paid 15000 pesos for diner and about 10000 for the breakfast. You need to bring cash to pay for the meal and for the guide as you can not pay by card.

The place is about 2600-2700m high, so it can be fresh, think to warm clothes.

To go there, the person in charge of our reservation gave us the contact of Rodrigo Cortez, who know well the place:
+57 312 2862467. We paid 40000 pesos one way for two people.

Great Birding Excursion at Rio Blanco
Apr 2019 • Couples
We stayed at Rio Blanco for two nights and had a guided half day birding excursion in the reserve. The accommodations are simple but nice and we had the whole lodge to ourselves. Note, there is no store or other food options close by so bring snacks/ enough cash to pay for meals on site ( dinners 15 mil, lunch 15 mil, breakfast 8 mil). Emailing the reserve to organize the trip was very straightforward. Our guide Daniel was wonderful- very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the birds. The reserve itself is beautiful and we saw a huge range of birds, including the famous Antpitta. Definitely worth a visit if you are into birding and much more affordable than other lodges nearby

Address on google is wrong
Jan 2019 • Couples
For those looking to go to this place the address on google is wrong. I took a Taxi to get there and ended up on top of a mountain in a ghost ranch with only one person there to tell me that this address is a mistake and lot of tourists make this mistake. Drove all the way out there for nothing then I ended up finding this place. You need to walk for 2 miles at least to get to the actual site where you need a reservation in advance apparently. I was unable to get inside because I did not know about the reservation. In case you go here make sure you don't follow the google address and ask a local how to get there. If you are driving through Sebastian area you are going the wrong way.

How to organize it!
Dec 2018 • Friends
Visited this beautiful reserve in December 2018. I took a half day tour which consisted of a guided walk along the Rio Blanco and up the hill to a Mirador. We admired many flowers, trees, orchids, bromelias. We saw different species of hummingbirds and many other birds. We stopped for tea at a guesthouse on the way. Very friendly staff, we also had a great guide.
The reserva is under the management of “aquas de Manizales”. You get the information about the different programs they offer through them and you book through them. They use WhatsApp both to send the information and for the booking. There WhatsApp number is:

Good for Antpittas
Nov 2018 • Friends
We spent a day here, enjoying the birds and its very pleasant surroundings. We arrived at about 06.45 and were provided with a basic breakfast and coffee before being taken to the Antpitta 'feeding stations'. This involved worms being laid down and the birds being called. The first one was a Bicoloured Antpitta, which was a little disappointing because when it did appear it grabbed the worms and immediately retreated. This took about two seconds but was normal behaviour for this particular Antpitta, we later learned. We then visited another four sites and saw a further three species of Antpitta, all of which were much more obliging, providing excellent opportunities for photography. The rest of the day was spent exploring the rest of the reserve and we saw a great variety of bird life. Even the restaurant area is good for bird life, thanks to all the hummingbird feeders in situ. For anybody interested in birds and nature, this is an excellent venue to spend a day.

Great birding near Manizales
Jan 2018 • Couples
We did not spend the night, but our lodge made the arrangements for us to have an all day tour of this great birding reserve. Lots of hummers, and several endemics that can only be seen here. We had an English speaking guide who was quite knowledgeable and coaxed the antipattas out so we could see them. The lodge looked nice and the staff was quite accommodating. They made us a nice breakfast and lunch during our stay. If you want more birding in the area you should stay at Tinamu Lodge, where we stayed while we were in Manizales. I thought the birding there was just as good as at Rio Blanco and it was much easier to arrange.

One of the top bird-watching destinations
Jul 2017 • Friends
This is a must-visit for birdwatchers. Tremendous variety of birds - saw 5 antpitta species plus a tapaculo. There were other birders from all over the world including one who had seen over 6000 species and was super-happy here.. Accommodations are comfortable and the food was good.

Terrific place for birders
Aug 2017 • Couples
After the somewhat lengthy process of making reservations, we stayed three days and thoroughly enjoyed each day's quest for birds. Arturo our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the birds, dedicated to helping you find them and most of all very kind and humble. We stayed in one of the three rooms in the new building. It was very spacious, clean and water was hot (although the concrete floors could maybe use a rug here and there for the cool nights). Food was traditional and good and they accommodated my wife being a vegetarian. Don't be discouraged by the road into the reserve. Once you arrive it is very tranquil and clean.
