About East Somerset Railway
A Trip Back In Time Come and meet our friendly staff and take a relaxing ride on our heritage steam train through the beautiful Mendip Countryside. The return journey takes approximately 40 minutes and is a 5 mile round trip. You pay once and you can ride the trains all day! As well as riding the train you can visit our engine shed and workshop and see our restoration projects up close, while away an hour or so chatting away to our very knowledgeable volunteers. We also have a signal box and miniature railway (these are only open on specific dates), museum, a shop and cafe serving delicious homemade meals each day we are in steam. We also offer Cream Teas, High Teas and Sunday Lunches on specific dates which need to be booked in advance as they do sell out very quickly. Our season runs from March to October and then we run our Santa Specials in December.

This is a charming heritage railway made even better by the friendly and helpful volunteer staff. The main attraction is the steam train rides but there is also a nice cafe and a shop. There are a lot of interesting vintage items to see and a spacious car park.

A truly memorably BAD experience yesterday. What sort of a racket is going on here? So bad that I have reported, with full evidence, their malpractices to the Charity Commission for investigation. Watch this space. I had been given a STEAM TRAIN AND AFTERNOON TEA voucher by my kind daughter. The Railway refused to deliver, for absolutely no good reason. Buyer beware.

The East Somerset prides itself to be "the friendly steam railway" and we found this to be absolutely true. My daughter and I visited on a Sunday afternoon when it was very very warm, but this did not spoil our enjoyment. (I am an enthusiast - my daughter is not) but we both enjoyed ourselves. I would describe the Railway as "small but perfectly formed" - only ~ 3 miles of track but a schedued steam service, cream teas and dining experiences at certain times and some very interesting authentic perid station buildings. The engine shed was well worth a visit - with a couple of locomotoves in different stages of restoration - it's amazing what this relativly small organisation is achieving

We visited the East Somerset Railway in June 2022. Having travelled through the area many times in the past and never visited, we thought that we should make the effort to go. The staff are all very friendly and we felt that the ticket price was reasonable despite the short length of the line. We had a couple of trips up and down the line so got our moneys worth. It was also nice to be able to walk round the engine sheds and see some of the other stock not in use. The cafe was also nice but presumably a franchise operation as seemed completely out of sorts with the rest of the railway, being decorated in a very modern style. Overall we were glad we went.
