A special place

I have been to Hambledon regularly for years - include it as part of your Dorset hill and view hike. It's more of a local institution and the locals are so polite and open.

Fantastic!

I love this hill and it’s history. Many years ago I participated in an archaeological dig here and vowed to return! Luckily the weather was excellent and views well worth the climb. We also visited the nearby Hod Hill which is also well worth the effort.

Breathtaking but challenging

There’s a fairly easy circuitous climb or straight up....which is pretty hard work but shows just what a fantastic defensive fort this was: you can’t even see the next rampart until you crest the previous one.

Whichever route you take, the 360 degree views are staggering- and both times we climbed it there was absolutely no one else up there. Glorious.

You can see for ever - well almost...

This is one of those wonderful Hill Forts where a short but steep trek provides stunning views across the landscape.Rising downs, other hill forts and magnificent bucolic landscapes fall before you.

This lovely National Trust owned landscape provides access to the ridgeway, excellent places to sit, walk and picnic. Be aware though the short walk is steep but so worth it...the village has some excellent places for refreshment.

Great views
May 2019 • Family
Hambledon Hill just outside Blandford in Dorset.
Some of the best views in this beautiful county.
The beauty is all around us every day sometimes you don't notice it.

Dorset has some of the best countryside in southern England.
We had family visit from New York over Easter and took them around.
After the hussle and Bussle of NY they were amazed how quiet it was and loved the place and have already given us dates to return

This is a great walk with great views. Fantastic history.
We parked in Main Street Shroton which is near the cricketers pub.

Make sure it’s a clear day so you get the best views.

Great workout hill

We live at the bottom of this hill and regularly take our retriever up there. The first part is quite steep and it takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the level part. As it is a hill it does dip up and down but it is well maintained overall and the tracks are in reasonable shape. It can get quite windy up top but the views are stunning and on a clear day it’s possible to see the Isle of Wight. A good degree of fitness is a plus as is solid footwear. From the trig point at the top there is a circular walk round to the right which is the old Iron Age fort. To the left there is another circular walk slightly more challenging and not so well sign posted. During the summer wearing shorts and a t shirt I often meet hikers in all their hiking gear, maps and compasses and lots of sweat, sometimes lost. A round trip from the bottom to the trig point at the top is about 40 minutes. The Cricketers pub is near the bottom and well worth a visit. Excellent food and great beer garden.
