Enez Castle, which is on a high hill called Acropolis in ancient times, was built to prevent barbarian raids from the Balkans. Although the construction date of the castle is not certain, the spoliated building materials on its walls indicate that it was built before Byzantium. It is mentioned in the sources that Lustinianus, one of the Eastern Roman Emperors, gave instructions to repair the castle in the 6th century AD. The Castle Extends in the Northwest and Southeast Directions. Main Entrance is in the Northeast Direction. Two Walls Extend from the Castle to the Sea, Protecting the Port on the Sea Side of the Castle. Large angular bastions were built on the sea side of the walls, but only the western bastion has survived to the present day. The western wall was adjusted to also see the Meriç River, thus a precaution was taken against attacks coming from the direction of the river. The building materials of the castle, which was repaired in the 12th century, were cut stones, bricks and ancient architectural pieces. Inside the castle, there is the Enez Hagia Sophia, which is the symbol of Enez, a small church with mosaic floors and a cave used as a chapel. A relief found on the cave walls depicting Pan and the dancing nymphs from Greek mythology was taken to the Edirne Museum. There is a white marble depiction of a Thracian cavalryman on the wall next to the monumental entrance gate of the castle. Additionally, the pointed Ottoman arch inside the castle indicates that the building was used by the Turks.

Great view from the hill where the castle is situated. Overlooking the Meric/Maritsa/Evros river flowing into the Aegean sea and just in front the Samothrace island. Unforgettable sunsets. Ruins of the old orthodox church with some preserved frescoes.
