Selimiye Mosque is one of Edirne’s most important iconic attraction. It was build in the 15th Century, unfortunately during our visit, Mosque is under restoration ,scheduled to complete by 2025.

However we did have a good tour inside . It is beautiful, was selected as UNESCO World heritage site in 2011. Selimiye is a vast and striking Ottoman imperial mosque. It has a grand dome, accompanied by 4nos. 71m-tall beautiful slender minarets under the sky (2 of which are under restoration)

For visitors, be sure to follow the customs, remove your shoes before stepping on the carpet to enter, wear clothes that covers your shoulders & knees and women must wear a headscarf.

We had great time exploring inside , indeed an architectural masterpiece with ceiling adorned with floral iznik tiles and especially for its big open space enchanced by its colorful floral carpet.

The most grande and most beautiful mosque I've ever seen in Turkey, the masterpiece of Mimar Koca Sinan. The mosque can be seen even from far distance i.e from Tunca Bridge. Built by Selim II or Selim the blond, son of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman the magnificent and his wife Hürrem Sultan.
Have some times to wander around and sit down inside the mosque and enjoy its beauty.

The Selimiye Mosque is a beautiful place and is a nice contrast to Istanbul in that there are virtually no tourists (at least in November when I went). While there is much to see in Istanbul, after a few trips to the city, I wanted to do something different so planned a day trip to Selimiye Mosque. I was very impressed. I think it is probably a trip for fans of architecture and history.

During the summer, I know there are day trips that can be purchased from travel agents in Istanbul. However, given it was November, I booked a bus ticket through the Backpackers travel agency on a Metro Tourizm bus. The bus was comfortable and took two and half hours. I left at 9 - arrived before noon and came back at 4:30 arriving in after 7:00 p.m.

Given there are not many tourists, there was a bit to figure out, but the buses are well marked and leave from the main bus station in Istanbul (which is easily reached on the Metro).

Once in Edirne, the bus station is a distance from the city. However, there is a free shuttle that stops right next to the Mosque (you cannot miss it). They are clearly marked Otogar (bus station). On the day I was there, it left the station from Peron 27. There are also taxis and public buses, but why pay when there is regular free service. From the Mosque, there are free buses back that leave from the opposite side of the street.

There is a small market, a few museums and streets with shopping and restaurants all near the Mosque.

It was great to get away from the tourists and see something a bit different. If you like the Mosques in Istanbul - you will like this one as well. It is a bit of a trip, but I was back in Istanbul in time for dinner.

Be sure to look for the English brochure which provides good information about this very special place.

The great Ottoman architect Sinan considered it to be his masterpiece, and he probably was right. Smaller than the great Suleymanie in Istanbul, yet very elegant with some references to the architecture of Aya Sophia

It is not generally known that Edirne was capitol of Ottoman’s Empire. Today relatively small town on Marica river, near to Turkish Bulgarian border, proudly shows greatness from passed times: Selimiye Mosque, built by well-known architect Mimar Aga Sinan.

Edirne's spiritual atmosphere is a high. I love this beautiful town and everyone is coming and seeing and I strongly recommend the food for the people. Around the Selimiye is wonderful. Traffic and car parking problems!!!

A definite "must see" if you visit Edirne, completed in March, 1575 we travelled out by bus on a day trip from Istanbul Otogar, well worth the visit, virtually no-one else there, just a few school children on a visit. Beautiful, airy and naturally well lit, and in perfect order inside.
