Uc Serefeli Camii ( Three gallery minaret), named after three galeries on its original minaret , is the first Imperial mosque that single dome used. Until then all mosques in Anatolia has been built by multi domes, number depending on the size, a tradition from Seljucks . One good example is, Eski camii ( old mosque) across the street to compare the two different styles. All architects after this mosque tried to excel this single dome structure .

Completed in 1447 and commissioned by Sultan II. Murat , the mosque also is the first such structure with an arcaded courtyard. The single dome which has inspired all the following architects is 24 m, yet the archaic colossal columns that carries the dome does not give the feeling of spaciousness as in the other masterpiece Selimiye Mosque , built a century later on a block a way. The interior is decorated more refined, the original magnificent wooden doors and window panels, made by kundekari technique ( a technique where no nails or glue used to in manufacturing but only putting together the wooden pieces) .

The mosque has four minarets, of which the original one, the tallest of its time has three galleries and three stairways to climb to those galleries. The second minaret, with two galleries built by the Sultan's son the Fatih Sultan Mehmet ( conqueror of Istanbul) , the other two single gallery minarets were built by Sultan I. Ahmet ( commisioner of Blue Mosque in Istanbul, beginnig of 17th century) and Sultan II Mustafa ( end of 17th century), one of the last Sultan who used Edirne as his prime residence. All minarets have different exterior , different stones, tiles are used in construction and decoration .

The mosque is in the city center and close to many attractions of the city. Avoid prayer hours which is usually posted on the entrance , safe to go in the morning since the day prayers start at noon ( one o'clock when summer hours used) . Ladies should wear head scarfs no bare arms or shorts allowed. You will take your shoes off when entering yet you can put them on shelves inside the mosque.

The best way to visit Edirne is by not going to the Selimiye directly, like many tourists do, but to follow the development of the architecture of the domes. Go first to the Eski Cami, a wonderful mosque - but with many pillars so not every one in the mosque can see the imam. Then to the Uc Serefeli Camii, also a truly wonderful monument worth a visit - with one big dome this time, but still a need for 2 pillars in the prayer hall. A great in between step towards...

... perfection. The Selimiye is literally taking your breath away as you enter it especially with the images of the previous 2 mosques still in your mind. You can only feel aw.

This was a 3 hour bus trip from Istanbul (12 euros return including a juice and snack). It was worth it to see this beautiful mosque. Each dome has a different design, it's stunning and so interesting. Each minaret is different. I loved it. It's worth the journey.

Beautiful, worth a visit for sure. Plan to spend some time to look at the ceiling and the tops of the columns.

This was the first stop of our visit to Edirne.

The mosque with the three balconies is unique as it also has a minaret called Baklava minaret lokk-alike :)

Interesting architecture of the minarets..

This mosque is an original. After walking around the outside be certain to go inside to view the domes and decor..also check out the small cemetery beside the mosque.

This is a really interesting mosque. There are 4 minarets that are all different - built at different times I believe. Look to the right of the main prayer niche - just above head height there is a small black stone set into the wall and covered with glass. This is a piece of the kabba from Mecca apparently. The courtyard is gorgeous.

This became Edirne's principal or Friday mosque when built in 1450. It is remarkable for its four minarets, one of which had for the first time three (üc) balconies, each accessed by its own spiral staircase. Its courtyard and domed interior are superb.
