It's an OLD carillon, so don't expect bells with stunning sound. But this is a hidden gem. We were there noon on a June Saturday and were the only people watching the grand spectacle of the clock striking twelve, and the nymph moving to the music.

I was really impressed with this small museum telling the story of this ancient settlement - the rise and fall (and rise) of Monnikendam. There are also natural history displays and a wonderful coillection of old clocks on the top floor - make sure to be there on the hour to hear all manner of bells, cuckoos, chimes.. Don't miss the chance to hear the gramophone from 1900 - for 10 cents you can hear it play (holes punched in a huge tin 'record').

The exhibit descriptions are in Dutch and English and the informative films are sub-titled in English. There is a very nice free brochure in Dutch, English, German French and Spanish - well done de Speeltoren!

Very interesting Museum about the history of Monnickendam and the surrounding villages together forming the region "Waterland" The clocktower is of course the main attraction with it's carillon dating back more than 500 years and unique in the world in it's kind. Beautiful history room and contemporary arts room. Also fun for children thanks to the youth loft with all kind of games and activities.

The Museum was closed when we visited Monnickendam on a Sunday afternoon of April ! The clock tower is quite reminiscent of the belfries found in northern Belgium and France and in fact is much nicer than a lot of them . We were told that the tower houses the oldest carillon in Europe and that there are it even plays music !

Visited on a Sunday afternoon and was surprised to find it open. Enjoyed looking around the different floors and was amazed by the children's area - such a wonderful idea. The top floor also was a treat - trying all the things out, a real hands on museum

A little gem - gorgeous architecture and great restaurants - especially "The Posthorn"! Wander the streets and harbour, and listen to the chiming clock!

Very nice Museum with a kid area and the clock mechanism is the oldest in Europe. It plays songs and has a little scene that plays. Lovely people running the museum and some nice videos explaining the local culture.

This museum is located in a historic tower in the ild city of Monnickendam. It is a good start the understand the history of Monnickendam and how this part of the country was won from the sea and subsequently defended against the sea. The museum has all kind of things to do for kids, so they will not bored by visiting this museum. In the top of the tower is a small Dutch 'draaiorgel' which you can try out yourself, and of course you can see the historic carillion which is in the top of the tower as well. The tower is also the place where city guides start tours on Friday evening through the old town. Times are indicated on the door of the tower.
