Yes, I know there are websites galore but my visit here proves you just can’t beat a conversation with a local.

Yes I would have known about taking the ferry to Marken and cycling back to Monnickendam which was amazing. Yes, I would have hired a canoe at Overleek, again highly recommended.

But, a website or app wouldn’t have told me that the local bike shop would remain closed as the owners were on holiday and I advised me to try Volendam instead. I wouldn’t have known to cycle to the little foot ferry which you can call by ringing a bell which summonses the ferry from across the water. I may not have spent each very hot evening i had in this delightful town in August 2019 swimming in a perfect, serene and safe spot, unless I had chatted to the staff in this wonderful TIC. It was a timely reminder of all that we gain through conversation rather than simply “looking it up”. Just brilliant. Thank you, ladies

This is a really pretty historic town, set around a beautiful harbour. It feels far more authentic and is off the tourist trail compared with Volendam or Marken. Great atmosphere, clean streets and good restaurants. Especially pretty at dusk when the lights begin to come on. Apologies for the fact that this isn't a review of the information centre; I can't find any other way to review Monnikendam.

Volendam, Alkmaar, Enkhuizen, Marken and Zaansche Schans are the tourists mainstays of North Holland, where tourists flock to after having exhausted the sights of Amsterdam. But in North Holland several villages are to be found which have a rich history; they are almost bypassed by the tourist crowd. One of those villages is Monnickendam, situated almost opposite Marken at the Gouwzee (a part of the Ijsselmeer.) (Actually, Monnickendam isn't a village but has city rights since 1355). Quaint narrow streets, heritage architecture from the Dutch Golden Age and a charming harbour make up a place well worth a visit. To illustrate how laid back Monnickendam is, parking is free of charge in most of the streets, of course, where parking is allowed; on Saturday the weekly market is being held, blocking the main streets in the center. Park the car outside the center (e.g. on the Bolwerk opposite the church) and take the 7 minute walk to the center. In the center, on the Zuideinde, is the Tourist Information office, where the staff can inform you further about Monnickendam.

Thanks to excellent advice from the staff at the Tourist Information Service we were able to enjoy a very pleasant walk around Monnickendam looking at the numerous wall plaques (gable stone tablets) depicting the trades and professions that had occupied houses displaying these plaques.
The music from the ancient Carillion Tower completed an excellent visit to this charming Dutch town.

Monnickendam is not a fishing village but rather one where fish are smoked and processed. It is named after the Frisian monks who first built the dam and settled there in the 13th century. The dams helped to turn the water that threatened this fishermen's place. What’s more a walk through the town transports you back to a more laid back time. The church was closed when we visited. The charming narrow streets, building architecture, and an enchanting harbor makes this a must see and do. There are two statues of note in the harbor area:

Statue of a Man Drying Fish
Many smoker shops are located here and, therefore, the reason why a statue of a fish smoker is found in the harbor area.

Monk with a Club
As mentioned above, the town was founded by monks. Here it looks like the monk is watching over the dam, ready to club anyone who opt to destroy it. Does it make you recall Teddy Roosevelt’s slogan of “speak softly and carry a big stick”?

I am reviewing Monnickendam here as I couldn't find a specific town review heading and figure most will look at this heading and see the review. It is a beautiful area, particularly around the sailing vessels which are numerous. A pristine village and cobblestone streets are the norm with a dreamlike quality; it is almost like a still life painting. The homes had the look of a pre set motif with gardens, benches and bicycles, etc. out front to add just the right touch of color. A photographer's dream. Many quaint shops and no bustle make it a walking paradise. We were lucky enough to be here on market day with several trucks and stalls displaying their wares. We wandered about and found a wonderful coffee shop and sat in the bright sunny window watching the world aimlessly go by on a cold windy day. We had been on a small group (8) tour going to the windmills when the guide suggested a side trip to Monnickendam for lunch. We are glad we did as we would have never known about this beauty. While the others went to lunch, we wandered, as is our wont, around the village soaking in the sun and this village"s beauty. Even the ride into the main village was pleasant passing the flat green fields and the occasional long distance cyclists. A nice diversion from the more bustling Amsterdam, this idyllic village is definitely worth the short side trip to gather some local color and perspective.

I needed some info as it was my first time in town. The gentleman in charge of the office was very prompt and courteous and provided me, in seconds, all I need for a day in town.

A visit to Monnickendam is off the tourist trail and a must visit.Small but beautiful.Monnickendam is easy to reach by bus from Amsterdam Centraal and takes about 20 minutes. The people at the information center are very friendly and helpful. From Monnickendam It is also a short bus ride to Edam,Volendam and Marken. This is a perfect day trip from Amsterdam.
