We were visiting my friends parents who stay in Appingedam. I am not sure if i would have visited it otherwise. We were pleasantly surprised to see this small town / Village which still has managed to retain the dutch flavor. I loved everything about this town the roads the small bridges, beautiful houses along the streams and the hanging kitchen ! I liked the hanging kitchen because i liked the town. I could not see anything special besides that they are hanging over the water body and there only three left. But I would love to visit Appingedam again just to experience the calmness and the serenity of the surroundings.

I had read about this unusual town feature so we included this town in our exploration of the area from our base in Groningen. We found the kitchens as we walked around the pretty streets festooned with flowers. We were also lucky to notice the official in charge of raising the the small bridge canal racing along to raise the bridge to let craft pass through. Probably not a single destination but it enhanced our day as we toured the area.

Besides seen from the small bridge by walking you will also have a nice view when taking a 1 hour boat excursion (4 Euro).

These hanging kitchens are unique for the Netherlands, and the whole setting is nicely picturesque, with small bridges crossing the Damsterdiep, and 17th century houses along the water. Only three remain. Best to plan for some more activities in the surroundings, such as a visit to the city museum and church, or to neighbouring places such as Delfzijl (with an aquarium/museum) or Groningen. The calcium oven west of the center of Appingedam also deserves a look, although I don't think it can be visited.
